Crown Of Light And Fire – Marissa E James

Someone I considered to be a friend had been killed in a gruesome and public way, and the kingdoms wanted to know if they were safe. I kept the information to a minimum around him. I told him that Cleo and Simon had died, but I did not provide him with any other details about how they died. Most of the kingdoms considered the Cyxe stone an illegal substance. Woodhine was the only kingdom that didn’t have the restriction. That was why I asked Queen Viscar for a meeting.
I was long overdue for lunch with Queen Viscar, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to speak with her. There was so much I wanted to talk to her about, to ask her about my father. Queen Viscar knew my father better than anyone, and she knew what it was like to be a seer. She could answer some questions that pertained to the Cyxe stone. Kaidi dressed me in a hideous green and blue dress with too much tulle and flowers.
They sewed the blue and green flowers onto the skirt to resemble various stages of a flower’s life cycle. The bodice of the dress was tight, restricting my airway, and it pushed my breasts up toward my chin. The thick, long, blue sleeves hung off my shoulders, leaving the top half of my chest bare. It was an ugly dress, one that I know Maryam made to punish me.
This was the style in Woodhine. Women wore dresses that were too tight or too big, regardless of the occasion. Kaidi pinned my hair in a cute style that formed a halo. More flowers adorned my hair, with blue and green ribbons throughout it. A few of my curls hung loose to frame my face, while the back half of my hair remained down. When she finished and I surveyed myself in the mirror, it took everything in me not to rip the dress to shreds.
I had never hated a dress more in my life than now. I loved wearing dresses. When I wore them, I always felt lovely. I preferred a simple dress to the monstrosity that I was wearing now. If my friends saw me right now, they’d mock me until the end of time. Luckily for me, they were in the capital, dealing with the investigation, while I was getting information from Queen Viscar. There was a knock on my door. No doubt, one of Queen Viscar’s guards would guide me to their queen.

The day all my past mistakes would come rushing to the surface, and my job would cease to exist. I tried not to think of the potential loss of my title, which I have worked so hard to secure, but the thought sank to the pit of my stomach. Why else would the queen demand my presence the second I stepped into the kingdom? Nothing good ever came from an impromptu meeting with the council, especially one requested by the queen herself.
I had barely made it past the gates of the capital before the Queen’s guards were dragging me back to the castle after an unsuccessful mission. It was a matter of time before the news of the mission would spread quickly, but I did not expect it to reach the queen of Parath before I did. I believed I would have enough time to plead my case with the queen. But I was wrong. Though I was not entirely responsible for the failure of the mission, I took the blame to save my Hunters from any punishment.
Surprisingly, the king of Delvain was lenient. He was more worried about the rogue member of the Storm Assassin’s Guild that seemed to make a home in his kingdom.
