Cupcakes To Die For – Kathleen Suzette

She reached her chubby hands up to the kitchen counter where I had just finished frosting pumpkin spice cupcakes. “Now, Lilly, Mimi doesn’t want your fingers in the cupcakes. The officers appreciate your help, but it’s best not to leave fingerprints behind in case they dust for prints and put them in the system.” I looked down at her cherubic face and smiled.
“What am I thinking? You’re sweeter than buttercream frosting. You’ll never get in trouble with the law.” She squealed and reached for a cupcake. I placed it out of reach. She had already had a plain pumpkin spice cupcake, and she didn’t need any more sugar. She was twenty months old, going on fifteen years, and thought she knew everything. There was a knock at the front door, and then the door opened. I heard Lucy call out, “It’s just me!”
I swooped Lilly up in my arms, which made her giggle, and I hurried over to Lucy as she walked through the kitchen doorway. “Auntie,” I said, placing Lilly in her arms. “I’m almost finished with these cupcakes. Entertain her.” “Oh, what a sweet girl Lilly is,” Lucy sang out. “We are going to take cupcakes to Granddad.”
Alec had chosen a formal grandpa name, but it fit him perfectly, and at the mention of his name, Lilly blurted out something that sounded close to ‘Granddad’. I chuckled. “That’s right, we’re going to go see Granddad. I’ll have these cupcakes packed up in just a moment.” Lucy leaned over the frosted cupcakes and inhaled. Lilly took a swipe at them, but she pulled her back.
“There’s nothing like the smell of fall cupcakes. They smell delicious.” “Thanks. I think they turned out really well. I’ve got a box for you and Ed, too.” I made it a habit of baking treats for the officers at the police station—or at least I tried to make it a habit, but sometimes my plans fell through the cracks. This would be a treat for them. I quickly placed the cupcakes into bakery boxes and closed the lids on them while Lucy entertained Lilly.
I turned to her when I was done. “I’m all set.” “Then let’s not waste any time,” Lucy said. “Come on, Lilly, let’s go see Granddad.”

It had turned chilly overnight, and I pulled my knit hat down a little lower over my ears. A crimson-colored leaf drifted down and landed in front of my feet, and I smiled, stepping over it. There was nothing like the fall in New England. “I know what you’re thinking,” Lucy breathed out as we ran slowly. “What?” I glanced at her, brushing a loose whisp of my long red hair from my face.
Lucy was wearing a purple knit hat over her short blond hair. “You’re thinking about all the delicious fall treats you’re going to bake. At least I hope you’re thinking about that, because I sure am.” I chuckled. “You know me so well. I got some nice Braeburn apples from the co-op yesterday afternoon, and I’m thinking about making some apple bread.
Maybe even some apple cupcakes.” She gave me a sideways glance. “Apple cupcakes? I’m not sure I’ve ever had an apple cupcake.” I nodded. “It’s like a pumpkin cupcake, but there are tiny bits of fresh apple baked in.
