A few seconds, and over a dozen different screens later, he responded. ‘I’ll make a copy of your desktop and take a look when I’ve got some time.’ ‘How long’s that going to take?’ ‘A couple of days.’ Roland put the screen to sleep, slapped Jake on the shoulder and winked. ‘In the meantime, stop trying to access things you know you shouldn’t.’ OceanofPDF.com Chapter Forty Ashley was beginning to love her new job.

Her new colleagues. The excitement of it all. The unprecedented adrenaline rush that came with uncovering the truth behind Jermaine Gordon’s death. It was addictive, and she was a junky for that sort of thing, had been even when she was a bobby on the beat, and she wanted more and more of it. Solving crimes and putting people away was her fix. The past twenty minutes had been the most time she’d spent getting to know Brendan.

He was all right. Nice enough bloke. Bit misogynistic, but all right. The first thing she noticed about him was his voice. Soft spoken and intriguing. She listened to his every word intently. And his accent. She loved the Irish accent. The way they rolled their Rs, pronounced their THs. Mmm. Thick and heavy like a creamy coffee. If she could marry any accent in the world, it would be that one.

They were heading towards a remote warehouse in Tilbury Docks. The report that Brendan had run into which manufacturers created the plastic bottles used for Henry Matheson’s drugs had come up with a positive result. It had once been established as a business on Companies House back in 2000 before being struck off the register. Later, the name of the business had changed to Handy Man Scrap Services.

And, no surprise to anyone, the owner of the business was one Henry Matheson. ‘How far away are we?’ Ashley asked. ‘Ten minutes. Fifteen tops.’ Brendan drummed away to a silent beat on the steering wheel. Long enough. Ashley pulled out her phone and opened her emails.

Something inside her told her she needed to keep going, to keep the investigation on its toes, at the front of her mind. Like the workhorse she was, she was dedicated to the job.

He’d once thought extreme doses of excitement came from evading the police by vaulting a brick wall and disappearing down a narrow alleyway, or sprinting away from a horde of armed rival gang members as they pursued him and his mates through the estate.

Up until this point in his life, he’d been wrong. Now his body – his toes, legs, fingers, arms – shook with a new type of adrenaline. Rawer, purer, harder. And it consumed him. What was the word for it? The one someone had used at school? Unprecedented, he repeated to himself, disregarding the word almost as soon as he remembered it. His vocabulary was minimal – he could count the number of thirteen-letter words he knew on a single hand – and he aimed to keep it that way.

Like many others he knew from the estate, he was a failure of the education system, and he didn’t want anyone – especially those closest to him – to think he was a bright spark that had been ignited in the classroom all of a sudden because he knew big words. God only knew how much of a ribbing he’d get for that.

And how much that would weaken his standing. Lewis looked down at his sweaty hands and felt them fight for purchase on the handlebars of his BMX. He wiped them clean on his hoodie, then checked his phone. The latest message in his chats told him it was time to move. Grabbing the bars and placing one foot on the pedal, he started along the streets towards the estate. Towards the meeting place. It was dark – the clock had just rolled into the early hours of the morning – and he used the street lamps overhead as his only source of illumination.

Although it was unnecessary, as from the age of five, as soon as he was allowed out unsupervised, he’d mastered the routes in and around the Cosgrove Estate. The potholes. The dips in the ground.
