Layers and levels of doubt crowded Kirsten’s mind, and she hesitated even more. There was nothing worse than disappointment, and Kirsten had had more than her share. She didn’t want to be let down again. Kirsten didn’t know if her heart could take another failing. She thought about stopping, halting the search altogether because she was afraid. Kirsten was afraid.

The tears she fought to suppress broke through, spilling onto Kirsten’s cheeks and leaving a trail that was erased by the next tears that fell. Giving up would be easy, and Kirsten sat there and contemplated doing just that for a while. And then the feeling of absence registered in her soul. She’d been robbed of so much for so long. She hadn’t even been given a chance to prove that she could be a mother. That opportunity was circumvented by those who thought they knew better, those who thought they could do better.

That chance was stolen by people who thought they were better than she was. Apprehension slowly began to be replaced with anger. They had no right, any of them, to take what belonged to me, Kirsten contemplated. This time when she reached for her coffee cup, Kirsten’s hand was much steadier. Even though the coffee was lukewarm, Kirsten drank it down quickly, bolstering her energy level again.

Without further thought and without even more hesitation, she set the cup down and hit the search button. Kirsten didn’t immediately look at the screen. She couldn’t. She was anxious and nervous, trying not to be hopeful but desperate to connect to what was lost. The complex emotions she experienced caused Kirsten’s heart to fall from her chest into the pit of her belly as she dared to see what, if anything, was revealed.

Kirsten allowed her eyes to finally focus on the screen. She froze. They were there, the distinguished Mr. and Mrs. Black, as described in multiple photographs. Thieves. Kirsten simmered. She scanned the pictures, some quickly, some more slowly, trying to glean as much as she could from what she saw. And then Kirsten’s eyes widened, and she froze. She leaned in and froze again, her heart failing to beat.

It couldn’t be, could it? Kirsten’s eyes dropped to the caption underneath the picture. Warren and Vivian Black with their daughter, Nicole. “Nicole,” Kirsten breathed. “That’s such a pretty name.” Kirsten clicked the picture, trying to make it as big as the screen so she could see who she knew to be her daughter.

“She’s so beautiful, oh my God, she’s beautiful,” Kirsten cried. She allowed herself that cry and didn’t do anything to try and hold it back as she stared at her daughter. Kirsten could see so much of herself in Nicole’s young face. She could see the father, too. Nicole was the perfect combination of the best parts of who they were encapsulated in one beautiful little girl.

I am forever grateful for those willing to read with me and enjoy the stories I’ve created. I am grateful to the Creator for allowing me such tremendous opportunities, and I will never take them for granted. I appreciate everyone who reads with me. I must also say a heartfelt thank you to my support team – my graphic designers, editors, Alpha readers, and street team. They are more than just ancillary to the process.

They are essential, and I can’t do this without their unwavering support. Last but certainly not least, I have to thank my family and friends who pray for me, lift me up, challenge me and continue to encourage me. This would be so much harder without you. Dedication Family is everything, even when it’s difficult to know where it beings and where it ends. Chapter One It was hard for her to breathe as she stared up, past the fluorescent light to the blandly colored ceiling. Her belly was so swollen to the point of almost bursting.

That’s how she felt like her body was bursting, being torn apart from the inside out.
