The 43-year-old worked as an electrician for the local council. He was a hard worker, friendly if somewhat introverted, a large man with a gentle nature. George was close to his family and had a few friends. Yet something was missing from his life. In his four-plus decades, he’d never had a serious girlfriend. He was more or less resigned to live out his days as a bachelor. Then, in 1993, all of that changed. George was introduced to a young woman named Christina and was surprised and delighted when she took a romantic interest in him.

Also surprised were George’s friends and family. Christina was just 21 years old and the polar opposite of George. She was outgoing and gregarious, the life of any party. Some found her pushy, but George was happy, and Christina seemed to genuinely care for him. The 22- year age gap was no barrier to romance. Within a year, the couple had announced their engagement. Six months later, they were exchanging vows at the Sunderland Registry Office. Against all odds, George Button, the lifelong bachelor, had gained himself a bride.

And there was further good news in 1996. Christina was pregnant. Their daughter was born later that year. George, who had never thought he’d be a husband, much less a father, was over the moon. He adored his baby girl and was deeply in love with his wife. Life, it seemed, could not get any better.

But it did. In 1998, the couple moved to a newly-built house in the leafy suburb of West Rainton. This was an upscale property and should have been outside their price range. The running joke among George’s friends was that he must have won the lottery without telling anyone. The truth was that George had dipped deep into his savings to put down a deposit on the house. Christina had fallen in love with the place, and what Christina wanted, she usually got.

In fact, it was clear to everyone that Christina was the one calling the shots in the relationship. George was completely in her thrall, willing to do whatever she wanted. Previously a frugal man, he was seeing his savings depleted, his debts racking up. Christina loved to shop and, with her, only the finest would do, whether it be food, clothes, or furnishings.

If George had any objection to this extravagance, he does not appear to have voiced it. His wife was spending them into oblivion, and he was standing by and watching it happen. Christina, meanwhile, was relishing her role as a suburban wife. She quickly introduced herself to the neighbors and became the unofficial social secretary for the street, arranging dinner parties and nights out.

Not even the responsibilities of motherhood could slow her down. Then, in 1998, the Button residence had a new lodger. He was Simon Tannehill, a burly teen who was Christina’s nephew.
