“Can they make outside calls or can they just call other classrooms?” “Check!” Fran said. She watched as Jill jogged off down the hall. “Fm going to try the phone in the teachers’ lounge,” she told Mike. “Good idea,” Mike said. Fran smiled shyly. “You’re not really wor¬ ried, are you?” “Are you kidding? This is a blast. Anyway, it beats being home by a long shot.”

Fran stood awkwardly in the doorway, her left hand holding her right elbow behind her back. She smiled sadly. “Yeah, I guess it does.” She couldn’t think of anything else to say. What could you tell a guy whose father beat him? “Well,” she said. “I’ll be right back.” “Okay.” Fran stuck her head back in the doorway almost at once. “That was quick,” Mike joked. “Oh, where are you going to check?” she asked. “Mr. Binder’s got a phone in the base¬ ment, I guess I’ll go down there.”

Fran nodded. “Great. Hey, maybe Mr. Binder’s still down there.” “At this hour?” “Yeah. I guess you’re right.” She waved and disappeared again. Mike waited until he was sure she was Eric Weiner gone. And even then, he stayed where he was, sitting behind the secretary’s desk. Ten minutes later, Fran was making her way back from the teachers’ lounge.

Like Miss ‘Merriwether’s phone, the teachers’ lounge phone was also locked. She was half¬ way down the first floor hallway when she heard the footsteps. She turned sharply. There was nothing in the hall, nothing but lockers, all of them shut. “Mike?” she called. Silence. “Owen? Jill?” Feeling foolish, she turned and continued walking. But now she was sure of it, sure she was not alone.

She stopped, listening hard. She heard a door scrape on its hinges. “Jaclyn?” she called. “Glen?” Her heart was pounding. Look at me, she thought. Scared silly. And of what? She turned around again. Keeping her eyes on the long dark hallway, she started walking backward. No one jumped out at her from the dark classroom doorways. No demons popped out of the lockers to grab her in their claws. C’mon, she told herself as she reached the end of the hall. Get a grip, Weber!

She was still walking backward when she felt the body smack into her, the arms close around her. She screamed. Ten Jill screamed, too, giving Fran an involun¬ tary bear hug. “Oh, God,” she said. “Sorry! I-I was looking for you.”
