Deadly Landscapes – Jesse Krenzel

“If it happens again, I’ll fire her.” Freddy’s silly smile faded. “You wouldn’t fire somebody on account of me, would you?” Not a chance. “Absolutely. Did you bring the slides?” I rose and slipped on my jacket. Freddy watched me with the empty expression of a dog that’s lost its toy. He shrugged, “I forgot. It’s no big deal. I’ll be back in town this afternoon. I’ll pick ’em up and get ’em back here by five today, okay?” “It’s your neck. You were lucky that Krogen didn’t seize them when he arrested you.”
He looked at me, thinking that over, but said nothing. “I’m on my way out. What do you want?” “Let me tell you on the way. You’re working my case anyway, right?” “If you come with me, topic number one is my fee agreement.” Freddy nodded. “Yeah, yeah, we should do that. I wanna do right by you.” Downstairs, Cody glared at Freddy from behind the reception desk, where a tall glass of orange juice remained on the high counter. He reached for the glass, but Cody deftly snatched it, took a sip, and stashed it on a low shelf behind her desk.
She turned her back on Freddy and got busy, scribbling out a caller’s message. On our way to Marcia’s, Freddy agreed to deliver a $15,000 retainer the next morning and another $10,000 the following week. I would not remain on his case past the preliminary hearing in the murder case under any circumstances. My office would do the investigation, but Freddy had to think about raising some serious money — at least a hundred thousand — for the trial attorney if the prosecution resumed.
“No problem,” Freddy said, brushing off Devon’s earlier financial concerns. “There’s plenty of equity in the business and the real estate.” But not in the bank, apparently. Freddy never mentioned why he’d come to the office in the first place, if not to bring the slides. It occurred to me suddenly that he simply had nothing else to do with his time. * * * Marcia Baldwin lived in an upscale Spanish-style condominium complex in the newly gentrified city center. Retail stores occupied the building’s ground floor, while above and behind the street facade lay a spacious central courtyard with pool and exercise facilities.
Urban professionals favored the location for its proximity to downtown business, but at night, the neighborhood reverted to its urban character, requiring iron gates and security patrols. I parked on the street in front of a tall black wrought iron security gate that barred passersby from ascending the half-flight of stairs to Marcia’s front door. I told Freddy to remain in the car and walked to the gate and pressed the button.
