Grinding her teeth in frustration, her eyes popped wide when he sat to take off his boots. “What’re you doing?” “What does it look like?” Amber eyes sent her an amused look. He had finished taking off his boots and rose. Her fingers gripped the sheets when he took off his sweater and started on the zipper of his denims.

“Wait.” She held up a hand. “If you think you can just waltz in here after staying away from me and expect to have sex–” “I don’t waltz.” Kicking away the jeans, he came towards the bed. “And it wouldn’t be sex.” Moving the quilt, he slid in next to her. “I want to be near you.” “Why?” She demanded. “You’ve made it painfully obvious that you want nothing to do with me.” “I tried to stay away.” He shifted to the side so that he was facing her.

“Told myself it was too complicated. My life was too complicated.” He reached out to finger a braid lying over her shoulder. “I tried working. I went away to the cabin to be alone to work on a song. Usually that would do the trick. I ended up seeing you every goddamn where. I can’t sleep–” His lips curved derisively. “I even desperately tried turning to another woman, and I couldn’t.” “Who? Your wife?”

She was determined to inject some sort of reasoning, cold ones into the conversation. His words were sliding into her and making her weak. “No.” His eyes met hers, gaze direct. “That’s done. Over with. I cannot stop thinking about you. And seeing the room, it makes me realize that it was no use running from the inevitable.” His fingers were sliding across the skin of her neck and sending heat spiraling. “Which is?” Her voice had turned husky and unwittingly, she had drawn closer to him.

His chest was wide and warm and fuzzy with hair. And she wanted to sink in until they were no longer two people. “That you’re lodged so deep, it’s going to require surgery to get you out. I think of you when I’m awake and dream of you while sleeping. You’re in my blood, my heart is tangled up. I breathe your scent and when I try to get you out, you lodge even deeper. You have your hooks in me and it’s only getting worse.

You’ve woven your spell around me, in me and nothing I do is working.” Christen went very still. The words, the magic of his deep baritone made her weak. Her breath came in quick pants, and she was hypnotized by him. Before she could stop herself, her fingers were curling into the hairs on his chest.

“I need you.
