Forget Me Not – Leah Cupps

How fleeting our time really is. These people thought their civilization would last forever—their kings immortalized in stone, their gods eternally honored. Yet within a few centuries, the jungle swallowed their cities whole. The thought hits me with striking clarity: Brody and I had so little time together. Four years together, gone in an instant. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the Maya understood something I’m still learning—that the time we have is precious precisely because it’s limited.
Through the narrow doorway, I can hear Corbin and Marcus discussing camera angles, their voices carrying on the breeze. I pace the small chamber, the stone floor smooth beneath my feet. I’m lost deep in thought, savoring the quiet moment alone. A sudden thunk echoes from above, followed by Corbin’s muffled curse. “Shit! Marcus, did you see where my phone went?” “I think it fell through that gap in the stones,” Marcus’s voice calls back. “Sounded like it landed in the chamber below.”
“I’ll get it!” I yell up at them, my voice resounding within the carved walls. I scan the chamber floor and spot the phone near the base of the wall, undamaged thanks to its toughened case, its screen flickering to life with an incoming notification. As I bend to pick it up, the text is impossible to miss.
The notification is from “K.” My finger hovers, wavering between an instinctive respect for Corbin’s privacy and my own increasingly desperate need for truth. The choice is made for me when another message appears, lighting up the screen. Hey handsome. Don’t forget our call tomorrow at 10. But what really stops me in my tracks is the sequence of glittery pink heart emojis. The blood rushes from my head so quickly I have to grip the stone ledge for support.
Handsome? Hearts? What the hell is going on? The chamber spins around me. It’s one thing to suspect a lie, another entirely to see the proof illuminated in blue light against a darkened screen. He’s seeing someone else. All those calls, all those interruptions—they weren’t work. They were another woman. A woman he’s apparently close enough with to let her manage his schedule, to let her call him “handsome,” to let her add a string of hearts to her name. How could I have been so stupid?

bit.ly/3dOTSW2 OceanofPDF.com PROLOGUE The copper tang of my own blood slides out of the corner of my mouth and down my cheek. If I had any control over the muscles in my arm, I might reach up and wipe it away. But I don’t. In fact, I can’t feel most of my body. The only feeling that’s really gripping me at this point is shock …
Shock that I’m here with my body parts broken against these ancient rocks. Shock that I have fallen forty feet through the air. Shock that I’m just minutes away from death. One moment I was standing at the edge of the overlook, the vast expanse of the desert canyon stretching before me like an ocean. The next, my feet were swept from beneath me, kicking at nothing but air.
Time slowed as I plummeted, watching the stratified cliff face rush past in rust- colored bands. It was quiet as I fell, as if the desert itself were holding its breath. The wind whistled past my ears, my clothes flapped wildly, and I had time to think, absurdly, that I didn’t even have time to tell anyone what I discovered. Then came the impact. A sickening crunch as my body collided with the stone dwelling built into the cliff side.
Pain exploded through my consciousness like a supernova, then mercifully receded into a dull throb as shock took over. If I had to guess, my back has been broken, which explains why I can’t move. Above me, carved into the sandstone cliff, the dwellings rise in terraced levels like a vertical neighborhood frozen in time.
