Tate warns, holding me to his side. “Whatever, I’m leaving. Tell my son, I’ll see him next weekend.” TJ collects Tanya and leaves. She has the decency to look abashed as she passes us. Tate holds me the whole time, a hand brushing my hair. I don’t cry. I hold the tears in. I think Tate squeezing me holds the tears – and everything else- in.

“Oh, Darlin’. I’m so sorry this happened,” He whispers. “You’re okay. I got you.” He rubs my back until I take one last shuttering breath. When the back door opens, signaling the boys return from taking the puppy potty, I straighten up. “Mom. Can we rename him?” Hudson asks as the puppy comes in and pees right on the rug. Hudson’s jaw drops. “I swear, he just went outside. The snow was yellow!” For some reason, that’s what does it.

My head falls back as I start cackling. I can’t stop, even as I’m wiping away tears and it’s not long before Hudson and Matty join in. Tate tries to fight it, but he starts chuckling too. I glance at him to find he’s already looking down at me.

I quickly avert my gaze back to the boys pulling boxes from under the tree. The boys jump up and down when they open the video games I drove all over town for. Tate gives me a heartwarming smile when he realizes Matty got one from me too. “Matty and I got you something too, Hudson.” Tate says. Hudson beams. Matty pulls the tall, skinny present from the corner of the room.

He presents it to Hudson who can hardly contain his excitement. I find myself leaning forward curiously. Hudson wastes no time tearing it open. It’s a camo fishing pole and tackle box. His smile falters for a minute and I know he’s thinking of the cancelled trip with TJ. “Oh, uh. Thank you.”

The window for trades is open though, so no one is safe, even if I’ve been with this team for nine years. After I quickly make myself as presentable as one can look in athletic shorts and a t-shirt, I find Coach Tom sitting in the chair in the GM’s office overlooking the rink. He’s got his glasses on and is looking at something in his hands with a small frown.

When Beckett Bloomfield, the GM, lifts his head and assesses me with those ice blue eyes, my stomach plummets.
