He didn’t even know the woman’s name, but for all Callie knew, he might have spent the better part of the weekend in the woman’s bed. He’d be danmed if he’d tell her otherwise. His smile faded slowly and his jeans grew uncom- fortably tight as he thought back on the kiss that had followed her jealous reaction. Damn, it had felt so good holding her, kissing her, touching her, feeling her respond to him in return. Something distinctive and extraordinary happened when they were in close contact with each other.

He was sure even if he had on a blindfold and earplugs, he would be able to pick Callie out of a group of women from that reaction alone. For comfort’s sake, he tried to put it out of his mind, but the view before him made matters worse. He didn’t remember everything about all the times he’d made love. But every detail of that long-ago night he’d made love to Callie, here in the meadow, was permanently etched into his memory as clearly as the kiss they’d shared this afternoon.

Every detail of that night long ago: every kiss, every word, every sigh. He’d been her first lover, and on an emotional level she’d been his. His first and his only. Not that he’d deliberately avoided falling in love again— it had just never happened.

It was impossible to force it; he should know, he’d tried for years. He shoved his hands in his jacket pockets, stretch- ing his legs out in front of him, trying to find a more comfortable position. Even the coolness of the night air was having no effect on the tight heat in his lower body as he relived vivid m«nories.

It was cool tonight, as June nights often were in Vermont. Maybe things would have been different if ten years ago the night hadn’t been unseasonably warm.

‘1 Just Thought You Should Know Why I Left, Rorke.” “I don’t want to know.” “But there were reasons. …” “Fm sure there were. But telling me isn*t going to change anything. So why waste the time? If you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.” He turned back to the engine. Callie’s frustration gave her voice a sharp edge. “What happened to you? You were more compassionate at twenty…you were human, you had a heart. Now you’re some kind of. . .of . . heartless machine.” Rorke straightened to his full height.

“What happened to me?” He laughed, a harsh, disbelieving laugh. ”You happened to me.” Dear Reader, I know this is a hectic time of year.
