Home Made – Michael J Baines (1)

Björn drove us to Stockholm where Albert had made a new life for himself after leaving us. I was excited to see him and I fantasized about what Stockholm would be like while I played with my Etch-A-Sketch in the back of the car. That first visit would be the beginning of regular stays with Albert. Julian and I couldn’t have been happier; spending our school vacations in Stockholm was way more fun than staying in Kristinehamn. Albert showered us with gifts and attention, perhaps in an attempt to make up for the lost years.
Being with him in Stockholm opened us up to a new way of living. He took us to see movies in massive theaters, and to saunas for hours of chatting, and of course, he introduced us to brand-new foods and flavors. Albert was happy to let us choose where to dine for our boys’ night out on the town, even when I demanded we return to the same buffet-style restaurant in Gamla Stan that had a salad bar. I stuffed myself with peeled shrimp, canned mushrooms, and white asparagus until I was on the verge of passing out.
At home, Albert introduced us to the signature dishes of other countries, heavily favoring Asian-inspired recipes. Julian and I were happy to be his critics, laughing and teasing him through each fiber-rich meal. “Rice and curry is good for your heart—the more you eat, the more you fart!” he’d sing as he fed us. These moments in the kitchen became precious to me. Julian and I became his shadows, even accompanying him to work, spending our days playing ping-pong with his coworkers.
After work, he’d take us to the local bar where he played guitar with his band. Albert had a singing voice that made people stop in their tracks. I watched as the adoring crowd listened in awe. I loved the bar from that moment onward. At these bars, he was a rock star. And though Albert was pretty chipper all the time, I learned he was even happier with a couple of beers in him.
I don’t know if Albert had a lot of money, but he treated us as if he did. I felt like a prince visiting him. In these moments it was easy to forgive Albert for leaving us, but as I grew older, I was reminded that consistency was not Albert’s nature. When I was asked to run the food tent at O-Ringen, a five-day Swedish festival that celebrates the sport of orienteering, I asked Albert to help me make Tex-Mex for the thousands of people the festival attracts every July.
