This is only the second time I’ve been here in the last six years and I can’t help letting my eyes wander around the entire room. Bookcases line the walls with law books and other sophisticated leather-bound tomes. There’s a massive wooden desk in the center of the office. Above a giant window that’s covered with sheer curtains and lets sunlight into the entire room, hangs a crucifix.

My uncle’s dark hark flops to the side as he threads his fingers through it and pulls. Uncle Owen and Dad are twins, and that has always fascinated me. How strange would it be to have the same face as someone else? They’re also both incredibly handsome, which always makes me feel weird to think. There’s something Uncle Owen wants to tell me, but I have no idea what.

His breathing is erratic and finally he huffs and leans against the front of his desk. “Kiddo, I have something I think you need to know, and I hate to be the one to tell you.” I blink up at him and play with the hem of my t-shirt.
