I mean… Even if we lose, and I end up going to Zelios, it wouldn’t…” My voice trailed as I noticed Malachi’s muscles grow taut again. Dorean instantly looked up and dug his claws into the bed, frowning at Malachi with a look that reminded me of someone ready to either take off running or to jump on him in hopes of not being attacked. “We’re not going to lose,” Malachi said in a steely voice, “I’m going to win you and I’m going to own you and you’re going to stop talking about dying or I’ll just send you to Theo to save me the trouble.”

I felt like I had been kicked in the chest with that as I took a step back. Dorean got off the bed, whining when he saw my reaction. I swallowed hard, just nodding my head before looking away uncomfortably. “U-Uhm, you seem okay. I’m just gonna go out into the hallway.” I managed, starting for the door. Malachi blinked, then flinched as he pushed the blankets back. “Adrian, I didn’t–” He cut off and choked, leaning over the side of the bed as blood fell past his lips, splattering to the floor.

Dorean yelped and I winced, instantly coming back without really knowing why. I grabbed the bowl and did the best I could of catching the blood. Malachi panted heavily, then vomited again, blood splashing into the bowl and practically overflowing it. “Dorean, grab another bowl and some towels.” I told him. He nodded quickly, fleeing the room with his tail flying behind him.

I waited, still holding the over-filled bowl of Malachi’s blood as he breathed heavily, clutching onto the bed post in a desperate attempt to keep from falling, but he started to slip and I quickly let go of the bucket, shaking out my hands and wiping them on my pants before I caught him, gritting my teeth against his weight as I pushed him back on the bed. He rested on his side, his face once again flushed as he sucked in deep gulps of air. I grimaced and stripped off my black t-shirt, balling it up to wipe at Malachi’s mouth, but he turned his head away toward the pillow.

“Don’t do that. I’m fine.” He grunted. I frowned, waiting for a second before I dared to disobey him and continued to wipe at the blood on his face. He glared at me and I felt bolts of fear rush up and down my spine, but my hand kept working. Much to my relief, Malachi didn’t attack me or anything. He just shut his eyes to block me out before I managed to clean up his face and the bed. Dorean came rushing back with a bowl and lots of towels rolled up in his tail.

Faster! They’re going to catch you! My heart beat a vigorous beat in my ears, like the sound of drums, my blood rushing and pumping through my system as I ran through the trees, breathing hard. My breath came out in silky clouds that sailed into the cold autumn night as rain beat down on my head like icy bullets. My clothes were soaked and sticking to my skin, making it harder to run through the slippery leaves under my sneakers. I could hear the sirens behind me.

They screamed and wailed, the sound of dogs barking not too far behind me. I saw the strong flashlight beams flickering through the thousands of slender, naked trees that surrounded me like skeletons trembling against the cold. Tears burned my eyes as I ran as hard and fast as I could, my arms pumping at my sides.

A voice over the megaphone yelled my name, to halt or they’d use force to stop me. I couldn’t stop! I couldn’t let myself be captured! Not after everything I’d gone through. No! I couldn’t let this happen. I didn’t do everything I did just so I could be caught and trapped all over again. They’d throw me in prison.

I’d be with people just like him! No! I couldn’t do it! I wouldn’t do it! I refused! These spine-chilling thoughts fueled my legs to work harder as I leapt over fallen trees and ducked under tree branches. I spun around a tree after almost smashing into it in the darkness, my hands grazing the rough slick bark. The rain and wind picked up, screaming in my ears with the sound of the sirens and dogs as they drew nearer and nearer. A cacophony of terror singing through the air.

No! Get away from me! Stay away! My breathing became labored gasps between wet choking coughs, lungs clenching in protest. My legs wobbled like Jello and my arms were starting to go limp and achy. A bitter mixture of salty tears and cold rain water stuck to my face. I managed to suck in a deep gasp of air just as my foot flung forward to hit the ground.

But there was no ground. My eyes flashed and I managed a sharp scream as my foot slid through the thick mud. I lost my balance, causing me to pitch forward and tumble headfirst down a steep, muddy slope. I cried out, dragging my nails through the leafy, muddy side, but I only picked up speed as I fell.
