“Belonging: A Conversation about Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.” Accessed March 8, 2025. https://www.krysburnette.com Cultural communication includes a broad range of methods through which culture can be expressed, ideas can be shared, and understanding can be fostered. These different communication forms are foundational to how societies construct identities, navigate differences, and build connections across diverse communities.

Communication can be categorized across cultures according to verbal, nonverbal, and/or symbolic which have different meanings and significance. Verbal communication varies within and outside of cultures and includes different languages, dialects, and accents, which are most often characteristic of cultural expression. These language differences are used to help people communicate casually and formally in day-to-day life as well as to narrate historical accounts, convey cultural norms, and capture memories.

Activities like oratory storytelling and proverbs help to communicate traditions and customs. Also, the tone, rate, and pitch of language can be used to convey emotions while communicating, which can also vary vastly among different cultural groups . Outside of what people say, it’s how they say it. This is considered non- verbal communication and includes a wide variety of actions and practices that communicate meaning without language.

For example, facial gestures and eye contact can communicate respect or a lack thereof based on different cultures and can cause conflict without any words. As an inclusive leader, it is imperative to understand the significance of different cultures and languages – verbal and nonverbal. Also, consider the use of space and how it can be used to communicate nonverbally, such as cultural norms surrounding social distance and interactions. As a leader, it is also important to consider cultural differences when it comes to attire, colors, and hairstyles.

Symbols are also important forms of communication that leaders must be aware of when leading diverse teams. This can include art, music, and ceremonies that communicate cultural norms. Cultural symbols can be deeply rooted in the overall identity, shared beliefs, and history of a particular culture.

These shared norms create a common language that can transcend barriers of language. Shared symbols can act as change agents to express collective values, mark significant life events, and establish social bonds across cultures. These different communication forms are imperative to understanding the role culture plays in communicating as a leader.
