The next second, my body was wrenched sideways and hauled from the seat like a ragdoll. I hit the concrete, my elbow cracking down hard, then my hip. “I swear to God, Nikolai!” I shouted through the pain, smashing my palm against the concrete as I scrambled to one knee. “I am going to rip your fucking head off!”

The SUV reversed, sending gravel flying in jagged bits of stone into my face. My hand flew up to block my eyes as the vehicle slid backward into the dark outside. A second later, the garage door began to lower, sealing me in. I was going to kill him. And then I was going to wait for him to come back and kill him again. Over and over again. You know he would just enjoy that.

Her sigh fell through my thoughts. Then the scent hit me. It wasn’t cedar and stillness, or that faint bite of oil he always carried— clean, with the ghost of spice beneath it, like steel warmed in his hands. Someone was nervous, sweating hard. Body odor mixed with the tang of old fries and rotting pickles. It clung to the air, crawling up my nose like a warning.

That wasn’t Nikolai. Before I could move, something slammed into my back. A boot drove between my shoulder blades, full force, and breath exploded from my lungs as I pitched forward, palms slapping the concrete, knees dragging. Pain splintered up my arms and down my back as I skidded half a foot before stopping. My vision blurred. “You really can get anything on the internet.”

The voice grated too high for a man, thin and nasal, but with something slick tucked behind it. Footsteps echoed across the concrete as he got closer, and at the far end of the space, a side door creaked open. Nikolai slipped through, a shadow against the harsh overhead light. He moved with one hand holding his arm in place, blood soaking through the fabric in a dark smear as he leaned against the wall and watched.

“Though this weirdo wants to watch.” The other man scratched at his chin with dirty nails, then rolled his shoulders and let them settle with an audible crack. “Came with a discount, though, so I guess it’s fine.” “Listen, pal.” I spat a thick wad of blood onto the floor between us.

“You don’t want to do this. You can still leave.” He ignored me, taking another step. Then another. “I mean, you can get anything on the dark web. Zip ties in bulk. Tranquilizers by the dose. Tracking collars. Even those weird metal rigs with the—what do you call them—stilts?”

When healing isn’t gentle. When it’s bloody, brutal, and sometimes… worth it. OceanofPDF.com H Chapter One The Goddess E WAS IN THE trees. I could smell him. The forest was wet with shadow, the ground lush beneath my bare feet, loam and moss and old rot wafting up through the air like perfume. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled, too loud to be him. He was cleverer than that. Always cleverer. I smiled. My hair fell loose around me, damp and heavy with mist, raven-black to my waist.

He liked it that way—wild, undone. I liked it better twisted in his fists. The wind shifted. Cedar. Sweat. Smoke. There. I moved. Not running. Not yet. Let the hunt have tension. Let him feel me coming. Feel my presence moving through his dream like blood through veins. He’d carved this place from memory and will, seeded the ground with every scent and sound he thought might please me. Even my body—this shape I wore—was his doing. The curve of my hips.

The taste of my mouth. All conjured. All gifted. All his. But the hunger? That was mine. A flash between trees—his shoulder, bare and marked with old ink, vanishing before I could snatch him. Tease. I gave chase. Branches clawed at me, gentle as lovers. My legs were long, sure, made for speed. I wove through undergrowth, laughter caught behind my teeth. He made me learn joy, this man. It wasn’t warm or tender. No. This was joy. The thrill of the chase, the violence of want.
