In the Veins of Monsters : An Enemies-to-Lovers Dark Fantasy Romance - Anne, Cate book cover

They had been aiming to kill. And then, cloaked and masked figures melted from the shadows. It was clear in the way they moved they weren’t ordinary mercenaries. A heartbeat later, the first attacker lunged. Seren moved toward Kiaan. It was a moment she’d trained for. For years. Every strike. Every breath. Every hour spent in the Veilborn’s training halls, bleeding, breaking, rebuilding herself. It had all been for this. To kill Kiaan Valcorsan.

And yet… Now she was fighting for him. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up, moving with a speed and precision that felt too natural. Her dagger intercepted the blade meant for his ribs. The clash of steel rang in her ears. She twisted sharply and sank her steel into an enemy’s throat. The body jerked, a hot spray of blood splattering across her arm, but Seren barely felt it. She moved to protect him like it was her purpose. Another shadow lunged from her periphery, but Kiaan was already there.

He met the attack head-on, his sword cleaving through the soldier’s chest like cutting through ripe fruit. One step, one strike, one kill. Like they had been made to fight together. The bond blazed. Had the bond done this? Had it driven her to protect him? The thought clawed through her like fire. Was she still in control? Had she been his from the moment their blood mingled?

Her pulse hammered in her ears, her grip tightening on her blade as she tried to force the thought away. Seren saw the third attacker moving in from behind. The dagger arced toward Kiaan. She moved, intercepting its path. Then pain. A sharp, searing slice through her shoulder, the blade cutting deep. Her breath caught, but she didn’t hesitate, didn’t falter, her body was already twisting away. She wrenched herself free, dagger flashing as she drove it into the attacker’s side. His body crumpled at her feet.

Warm blood seeped into her sleeve, soaking into her skin and dripping down the inside of her leathers. She barely felt the wound. Kiaan appeared next to her, his gaze momentarily drawn to the slash of red at her shoulder.

Whether you stumbled across it by accident or sought it out on purpose, I’m genuinely grateful you decided to spend your time in this world I’ve been obsessing over. This story wouldn’t exist without my incredible first readers, Amy and Alyssa, who bravely waded through the very first draft when it was basically just bare bones held together by hope and caffeine. You two saw potential in what was honestly a bit of a mess, and your encouragement kept me going when I wasn’t sure this thing would ever make sense.

Huge thanks to my second readers and original writing group, Rachel and Diane, who helped shape this story into something that actually resembled a proper book. Your insights, questions, and gentle reality checks were exactly what I needed to push through to the next level. Thank you to my partner, Craig.

Without your support, this dream of mine would have died an untimely death.
