The guests are arriving, and the wedding events start tonight. I sigh as reality creeps in, because what happens after this? “So, you just happened to volunteer for extra work?” Kendrick asks, casually. I’m in the hall, headed back to my suite—and my Kennedy—when Kendrick finds me, hands in his pockets, squinting like he already knows some shit.

I barely look at him, focusing instead on making sure everything is lined up perfectly. “It needed to be done,” I shrug. “You doin’ a lot for somebody who don’t even know if they wanna be with you. This some singing in the rain with a boom box type shit.” I pause my stack of perfection to side-eye him. “And yet, yo’ ass is standing here talking to me about it. Don’t you have some business to take care of?”

He gives me one last pointed look before disappearing. The sad thing is, he’s not wrong. I am doing a lot for Kennedy. More than I should, considering I don’t even know if she wants this to be something real, but I don’t give a fuck. I want her and whatever it takes is what it takes. Lingering doubt creeps in and I wonder—what if I’m not what it takes? But I shake it off as quickly as I think it.

If she showed no interest, that would be creepy as fuck, but her past is holding her back. I can see that now. I can’t time travel to stop everything that hurt her, but I can do everything in my power to make sure she never feels alone again. While I’m walking back, the event coordinator texts about the private dinner on the pier. How she got my number, I have no fucking clue, but now I’m praising the stars above.

Everything is set, except there’s been an unexpected arrival. One of Shanice’s cousins showed up with their partner, and she’s concerned about being short a room, and two table settings. I’m more excited about the fact that we’re short one room. The solution is obvious. I’m smirking the whole way to the room. Kennedy looks up from where she’s perched on the couch, scrolling through her phone when I walk in through the connecting door, no longer surprised by my appearance in her space.

Sometimes it turns us into a shell of ourselves. Other times we mask it with laughter and jokes. Some stuff is going to be funny, and some is going to be emotionally heavy. Blame the characters, not me. Being an author is much more of a spiritual experience than I thought it would be.

I’m just the vessel through which this story was told. Thank you for giving my writing a chance, I hope you enjoy it. <3 I cuss a lot and use AAVE in my dialogue and text bubbles on the pages because I'm a texter in real life. You ALWAYS did. OceanofPDF.com Chapter 1 Khalil “What you mean the suite isn’t ready? Your app said it was done an hour ago.” Yelling at the receptionist is definitely Karen-ish, but in this instance, I have a right to be upset. “Sir, wi jussa likkle behind.” Though her Jamaican accent is thick, I can understand most of what she’s saying. None of it is what I want to hear. A waiter comes by with champagne flutes and I’m tempted to ask him to keep them coming.

My patience is thinner than normal. Usually, I give people more grace, but I just had the flight from hell sitting next to a crying baby for almost six hours. It’s not the kid’s fault, but still. Fuck me.
