Italia Magazine – Issue 220 AprilMay 2026 – Italia Magazine

45 Just 30 kilometres from Venice and a 30-minute train ride, Treviso’s airport is used by many people heading for the tourist-packed floating city. It is a pity that very few travellers stay and explore Treviso itself, which has a charming walled centre with canals dotted with ancient waterwheels and contemporary sculptures, and pretty rivers perfect for strolling or cycling. It has frescoed façades dating from the 12th to the 14th century, and impressive paintings in its churches, such as some by 14th-century artist Tommaso da Modena.

April/May 2026 Italy’s largest sea port receives significantly fewer tourists than more popular Italian cities, and though tatty in places, it offers a blend of medieval charm coupled with vibrant street life. You have to sample some pesto when stopping to eat while wandering through the narrow alleyways of the old city, filled with baroque architecture – it is the birthplace of the delicious basil and parmesan pasta sauce.
If you need a break from the elegant architecture, museums and galleries, there are boutique shops to peruse and plenty of characterful cafés. A large aquarium is located in the renovated old port. It is a good base for hiking, biking, horse riding, kayaking and boat tours. This overlooked, underrated, ancient port city boasts spectacular views and a characterful old town, without the crowds and costs of nearby Amalfi.
While very much a working city, it is more laidback than Naples, and if you’re not exploring the narrow streets and alleyways and their inviting boutiques, bars, medieval churches and neighbourhood trattorias in the slightly dishevelled centre, you can hit the beach, take a stroll along the tree-lined seafront promenade, or perhaps the magnificent cathedral, imposing Arechi castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, or further afield to the archeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and Vesuvius.
April/May 2026ITALIA! 47 With a wonderful backdrop of mountains and vine-clad hills, this compact and elegant historic city is an Alpine gateway where Austrian charm meets Italian flair. Its architecture is a fusion of Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo and includes a cathedral with a frescoed cloister and the Palace of the Prince-Bishop. Dining here ranges from unpretentious little family restaurants to Michelin-starred establishments. Many mountain trails and more than 50 kilometres of bike paths are accessible from the city.

I hope you are inspired by nature’s energy as much as I am. It’s a delight to be able to look forward and present yet another packed issue with even more pages, features and imagery to inspire your passion for Italy. We have journeyed the length and breadth of il bel paese in this issue, but we start our journey on a boat in the Venetian Lagoon. This is the best place to begin if you want to understand what Venice is all about.
There is plenty of inspiration if you want to get off the beaten track this year – Italy has a wealth of undiscovered corners and we reveal our top 10. We also celebrate 100 years of Ducati – and don’t miss our resident expert’s guide to living in Tuscany. In the kitchen, we have plenty of seasonal inspiration with Gennaro Contaldo’s favourite regional recipes, four takes on asparagus, and midweek suppers.
Add some spring sparkle into the mix with our fruity prosecco cocktails, chocolate for Easter and beyond, and wines from Abruzzo. All this, plus news, reviews, your photos and much more. Until next time, Amanda Robinson Editor THIS MONTH’S CONTRIBUTORS KATE WICKERS heads to Calabria to stay in Tropea, a characterful coastal town with beautiful beaches and plenty to enjoy. She also uses it as her base for exploring the wider area along the stunning coastline as well as inland. You can find out more about her ten highlights from this sunny southern spot on page 30.
LISA KJELLSSON Freelance writer Lisa Kjellsson (you’ll find her @thelkedit on Instagram) covers travel and wellness for British and international publications. She visits Tuscany to discover fine wine and food, and a quieter pace of life. Turn to page 50 to read about her adventures on the Etruscan coast. AMY MCPHERSON is a member of the Travel Writers’ Guild and a frequent visitor to Italy.
This time, she takes a slight detour to San Marino, which is Italy’s closest neighbour (surrounded on all sides by Emilia-Romagna) to find out more about the world’s oldest surviving republic. More on this intriguing principality on page 58.
