‘Going so far as to create food that isn’t food, that’s a sim playing out in the mind, while diners chew on processed, edible cardboard. No offence to Harmony Li, Eria dear, but surely, surviving on edibites is a choice.’ ‘Consuming Feast is a choice, too,’ Serenity Ko said tersely. ‘Of course it is. And yet, you choose to ignore me, refuse to engage in conversation with me…’ ‘You’ve already made your views clear, Ammmama,’ Serenity Ko responded coolly. ‘You disapprove of it because I’ve invented the future of food, while all you’ve done with our cuisine is try and maintain its past.’

‘Ah, how stunted of me, to preserve a thousand-year-old cultural tradition.’ Ammamma’s tone dripped hostility. Don’t engage, she’s goading you into sniping at her, Serenity Ko thought. She tried to focus on soothing visuals, like the sight of empty space when she went slinging, the neon blue glow of a nilatini done right, the soft rouge moue of Saraswati’s lips… ‘I understand that you were trying to be charitable to that Earthling. And you know me, I’m no xenophobe, so if you want to pursue a romantic relationship with her, then be my guest…

but inviting her into our kitchens, using the food knowledge that I blessed you with, all to destroy our heritage —’ ‘You did nothing but belittle me all through our time together,’ Serenity Ko snapped. ‘I tried to learn from you, but Saras is the only one who didn’t treat me like an idiot.’ ‘I didn’t treat you like an idiot, Ko,’ Ammamma said firmly.

‘I only showed a little tough love, and tried to set realistic expectations.’ ‘Enjoying the second course?’ Honour Les asked, continuing their habit of appearing at inopportune moments. ‘Yes!’ everyone chorused around the table in near unison. ‘The port is absolutely perfect to pair with the broth of moss and memory,’ Ammamma said cheerily, giving nothing about the ongoing disagreement away. Serenity Ko had to hand it to her—the old dragon had an immaculate poker face. ‘Ah, that’s one of our signature dishes,’ Honour Les said with pride.

‘We always hear the loveliest things about it. The shroomings are freshly sourced from the Arc each nava, and steeped in a vine-leaf vinegar for up to seven navas before they’re deemed ready for ras extraction. The broth itself is agitated in our ice centrifuge—a novel technology that we’ve been using…’ Ammamma listened to Honour Les prattle on with the appearance of undivided attention.
