To signify the change, correct badges were fitted to both door tops. Although purists might not approve of the changes, together with electric fan, radiator expansion tank, and modern electrics, it was still a thorough job. The car changed hands a few times since then, most recently in July 2025 when it was bought by a Northwest- based enthusiast. Since he already had his E-type fitted with Motor Legends’ six-speed ‘box, he soon asked the team for his XK150 to be given the same treatment.

The idea of fitting a modern transmission to a classic Jaguar originally came to Motor Legends’ Keith Perkins after he’d bought an E-type Series 3 coupe with the Borg- Warner three-speed box. Disappointed by how much power the transmission sapped, he realised a modern gearbox like the one fitted to his XF Sportbrake 2.2 would solve the issue. After starting Motor Legends, he employed former Lynx engineer Andrew Parkinson to achieve this goal. Following months of research, Andrew finally decided on Ford’s version of the ZF6HP because, unlike the German original, it has a separate controller allowing the ECU to be uploaded with new software he’d designed to govern the transmission in different settings.

After driving Keith’s original E-type in 2018, plus two XJ12s last year, I know the ‘box works well with the V12 – but I haven’t yet experienced it with Jaguar’s classic straight-six. Motor Legends has fitted the ‘box to several XK-engined cars over the years, including E-types and Mk2s meaning it already had an adapter plate to fit between the gearbox bellhousing and engine.

But this was its first XK150, and the car’s old-fashioned construction revealed new challenges. “There’s a massive cross member on the chassis just behind where the gearbox sits,” Andrew tells me. “Since the six-speed is longer, it extends into it, so we needed to modify the cross member so our gearbox now fits into it.”

FIRST WORD April 2026 \ Jaguar World | 3 As Craig Cheetham and I will both tell you, buying your ninth or tenth Jag is easy. You just do what you did several times before and your experience will help you catch the dodgy cars.

But what about when it’s your first? Buying your first Jag is a big occasion for many enthusiasts and it can be a minefield. That’s where this issue should help. We’ve got short guides on how to buy twenty of Jaguar’s best loved models, and we’ve got an upgrading guide to show you how to make the best of them once your name is on the V5C. Not enough buying? Well, good news. Because we’ve also got a dedicated buying guide focused on Jaguar’s most sensible and practical car yet, the E-PACE.

Elsewhere in this issue, we visit a family whose love of 1960s Jaguars has filled a double garage and made memories with one model over several decades. Paul Walton’s been testing the ultimate supersaloon against the Maserati Quattroporte, to find out if aluminium construction made the X350 XJR the car to beat. We look at cars crucial to the Jaguar story, from the boss’s MkX to the car Tom Walkinshaw created to bring back Jaguar’s sporting claws.

And we take a look at an XK150 for the 21st century, courtesy of a modern automatic gearbox upgrade. Rob Hawkins has been busy too – not only have we completed the X300 engine removal, but he’s been answering your technical questions and offering advice on quick fixes.

Paul might not have used his cars much owing to the weather but Letitia Mace has been preparing for the summer season with the very last X300 XJR.
