Jacksonville Journal On Demons – Kevin A Davis

Another teen slid off the door. “Whoa, whoa.” Leah stepped into the road, flagging the driver to stop. Officers, with their weapons drawn, joined her. Marie spotted me heading toward her and pointed south. “Walk the perimeter. Bind anyone you have to.” “I could help the wounded in there.” From the reaction of the teens, I assumed the effect was over.
“Most important to contain this. Take pictures of any curious truckers and their plates. This is going to be a mess. David, go rest in the car.” As I headed for the grassy median between the automobile pumps to the semi area, I tugged at the realms. One of the bodies I passed was that of an older woman with an umbrella, still wrapped in plastic from the store, tight in the grip of her right hand.
Blood pooled beneath her, though I couldn’t see an obvious wound. The heavyset man had bullet wounds in his chest and no sign of a weapon of his own. I sent Haven ahead of me, and a weak ghost lay beside a picnic table in the grass. “I’ve got someone wounded on the south side.” No one responded as I jogged up to him while checking the realms along with the grass for coins.
If the coven had been watching us, it had to be from a distance, but I wasn’t taking any chances that they had left us a surprise. “It’s an officer. Gunshot wound to the stomach.” I kneeled at his side, testing with the Earth realm. “Safe to send in the police, Pyre?”
“Kristen?” “I’ve checked the path here, yes.” “He’s bad. I’m going to try to help him.” No one stopped me. I felt weak from the night before and the evening. The bullet had gone through. It had entered just under his vest. The mud of the Earth realm molded in my hands as I worked on him. In the background of the comms, the trucker badgered David, somehow pinpointing him as the authority figure.
As the man swore, he focused on the one Black youth in the group, spewing bigotry. “You’re speaking of the kid with the broken ankle?” David sounded annoyed. The man cursed. “Someone’s going to pay for my window and paint. It’s all scratched. That hoodlum doesn’t have the money to fix it.” “I’d say that’s the least of your troubles.

This is because it ties together elements that have been brewing in the background for a while. Except for the opening, I never switch off of Kristen’s POV. However, I might write a short for one scene involving Marie, because it feels like it needs to be told. Someday. You’ll recognize the spot, near the end.
