Janissary Commander – Fred Hughes

I wonder whether you’re a real diplomat or a political appointee? If you were an experienced representative of the U.S. government, you’d know what credentials we expect you to present and have them. But I suspect that, because of the visibility of this position, you’re a political appointee, and that makes me wonder how official your appointment is.”
“Look at him fidget,” Gort stated. “You struck a nerve with that statement.” And I don’t even know where it came from. Suddenly, it was there and sounded like the right thing to say. “Strategy or Diplomacy skills, I suspect,” Gort responded. “Probably both.” “Now, being European, I don’t claim to be an expert concerning American politics, but it’s been five weeks since I met with General Atkinson. It seems unlikely to me that the president of the United States could brief Congress about the presence of aliens in Earth’s Solar System, nominate someone as a special envoy, and have that person confirmed by Congress.
Hell, if your Congress is anything like the European Parliament —and I suspect it is—there would be senators and congressmen included in your party.” “Are you implying I’m not an undersecretary?” Seward asked testily. “I won’t beat around the bush, Mister Seward. Based on everything we’ve seen so far, I’m not implying anything; I’m saying it out loud and plain as day.
I don’t believe you’re authorized to negotiate with the Fylak Empire.” Tammy leaned back in her chair. “Now, having gotten all that out in the open, let’s hear what America’s so-called official representatives want,” Tammy said. “The United States feels that it’s not being adequately compensated for the support it’s providing.” That Admiral Lewis answered the question didn’t surprise Tammy.
“And what do you feel is adequate compensation?” Tammy asked. “We want technology up front, not a vague promise of future access to technology,” Lewis immediately responded. “You obviously have a wish list of the technology you want,” Mendar stated. Lewis nodded. “Advanced computer technology, plasma weapons, and… star drives.”

* * * * * OceanofPDF.com Foreword Janissary Commander is the continuation of a series I started over two years ago. I’ve been a fan of LitRPG books since they first started appearing. Like many of you, I didn’t enjoy wading through all the stat tables and what seem to be constant quests such books often entail. Then I realized, aren’t the novels I’ve already written just a series of quests Hazard King, Julie Adams, and my other characters are trying to accomplish?
I’d already decided to write a space opera adventure set in the near future. This series, in fact. Why not weave a little role-playing into it, but—and this is a big but—not overwhelm the reader with that side of the story? I think I’ve accomplished that. For those of you who don’t want to delve into all the point distribution and such involved in this type of book, I’ve separated acceptance scenes into separate intermissions you can skip. One other comment to clear up any confusion that may arise involving the dialogue you’ll encounter.
Tammy Escobar has multiple conversations with telepathic aliens and an AI that’s embedded in her body. Per typical writing convention, when Tammy—or anyone else—is thinking, the text is in italics. But when someone else is using telepathy to talk to her, or her AI is talking to her, their side of the conversation will use quotation marks, because someone else is talking, and italics because it’s happening inside Tammy’s head.
I hope this explanation makes things less confusing and allows you to enjoy the interactions. Now, enjoy Janissary Commander.
