Interstellar End Game – Dawn Chapman

My eyes burned from hours of staring at data, and the constant chime of new alerts was beginning to fray my nerves. “Can you not turn it off, for just a little while?” Des rubbed his temples, trying to fend off the headache I knew had been building since that morning. I moved to hit the Off button on the notifications, knowing I’d have to see them flashing in the corner of the screen instead.
Every second felt like a ticking clock, counting down to a departure we weren’t sure we were ready for, but had to be. Our ships were filled to capacity, a constant reminder of the massive crew and supplies needed for our journey to the Dolx quadrant. But despite the stress, it was satisfying to see the boxes ticked up on the screens before us. Suddenly, my comms device beeped, and I quickly answered, “Frost, speaking.” “We have an incoming transmission from Grand Admiral Selia on Hidaba Four,” Ashleigh’s voice came through my comms.
“Shall I patch it through?” “Please do, and project it on the screen for all of us to see,” I replied. The image of Grand Admiral Selia and his daughter appeared before us. “Grand Admiral,” I greeted him with a nod. “Good to see you again. Lieutenant Commander Wells and my brother are with me. What can we assist you with?”
“We’ve detected several large ships entering our first quadrant of space,” Selia reported. “They seem to be heading toward your fleet at slower speeds.” “That’s most likely Baxter’s fleet,” Des chimed in. “They’re earlier than expected, but we did ask them to expedite their arrival.” “Do you think that means we can finally depart?” Admiral Selia asked hopefully.
“I certainly hope so.” I glanced over at David. “Get me in contact with their commanders. Let’s coordinate this operation. Once they’re settled in, we’ll have everything we need to make our departure.” I knew David was just as eager as I was to get out of this system. Every day spent here put the Claymons at risk, despite Ketah’s efforts to bring other races closer for protection. The early reports were coming in that the Haki-Sha weren’t leaving the area and were killing anything that came close.
As we waited for communication with Baxter’s fleet, my mind wandered to everything that had been weighing on me. The news from Doc and Eboni, the decisions I had to make for my team and family.

“Status?” I asked, my hands trembling. “Eboni’s coming in now, Fleet Admiral,” Atayu announced from the COB’s chair before me, his voice betraying a tension that made my pulse quicken. “Is everyone accounted for?” I forced the words out, my throat tight with dread. “Ranik and—” Atayu hesitated, a brief but heavy pause that made my stomach drop “—Morro also reporting in.” The sisters’ faces appeared on the holographic screen to my left, their features illuminated by the soft glow of their Zion ships. I nodded in acknowledgment to each one, grateful to see them.
Other faces appeared as Atayu connected me to their respective command centers. It was good to see them all. Baxter, my mom and father… Des. “Damage reports are coming in now,” Atayu said with a shake of his head. “Bad?”
