Kawach – Swati Sandeep (1)

Until you two are bound in marriage… Anu will remain in danger.)” Anika clutched her mother and sobbed. “Please, Mumma… aap itna matt boliye… aapko aaram karna chahiye… main Bhaiya se baat karti hoon, woh shaadi ke liye mana nahi karenge. Hum wahi karenge jo aap chahti ho. Aap please itna stress matt lo. (Please, Mumma…
don’t talk so much… you need to rest… I’ll talk to Bhaiya, he won’t refuse the marriage. We’ll do whatever you want. Please don’t take so much stress.)” But Mrs. Khurana couldn’t calm down. Her fear for her daughter was too great, and that fear was worsening her condition. The nurse rushed in and sedated her. Anika collapsed into Rudra’s arms, crying uncontrollably. She begged him to agree to the wedding.
She was training to be a doctor; she knew her mother wouldn’t make it out of the hospital alive. If this was her last wish, Anika wanted to fulfill it. She couldn’t let her mother die with fear in her heart. Her mother had compromised all her life as a wife and daughter-in- law; Anika refused to let her compromise in death.
✦✦ ✧✦✦ When Rudra brought up the topic of marriage, Dev wasn’t happy, but he understood. The last wish of a dying parent weighed heavily on the soul. “I know, Bhaiya… aap chahte thay ki hum kuchh saal wait karein. (I know, Bhaiya… you wanted us to wait a few years.)
But…” “Not everything can happen as we plan, Rudy,” Dev cut in gently. “Apno ke liye kabhi kabhi hamein samjhaute karne padte hain. (Sometimes, we have to make compromises for our loved ones.)” Rudra nodded. He was relieved that his bhaiya hadn’t refused. If Dev had said no, Rudra would never have gone against his wishes, and that would have shattered his princess.
Dev pulled him into a one-armed hug. He knew exactly what Rudra was thinking. Sometimes he wished his siblings didn’t respect him so much. It would make their lives far less complicated. Now he had to think from both his perspective and theirs, because they would never voice their own. “Do you want this marriage, Bachcha? Are you ready?” He brushed a hand through Rudra’s hair. He knew Rudra would do anything for Anika’s happiness, but marriage wasn’t about one person. It was about two.
If even one heart wasn’t ready, the relationship shouldn’t move forward. Rudra sighed and nodded. He wasn’t ready for marriage, but Anika wanted the wedding. And like always, her wishes came before his. Dev cupped his face and lifted it. “Ab bol… kya tu ready hai? (Now tell me… are you ready?)” Rudra lowered his eyes. He couldn’t lie to his bhaiya. Not willingly. Dev exhaled. “I will talk to Mrs. Khurana, Rudy.
I’ll give her all the reassurance she needs.

The sky looked like it was on fire. Rudra twisted restlessly in his sleep. Dev was back home. For the past two weeks, he had been so busy taking care of everything that he’d barely had a moment to breathe. Now that he was finally relieved, the stress was crashing down on him. Nightmares were plaguing his sleep. Rudra was seven again and sitting in the back seat with his bhaiya.
They were going back home from a party and getting bored. Dev picked a fight with him, and Rudra was getting irritated. A thirteen-year-old Dev teased. “Abey complaint ki dukaan, band kar apni complaints. Baby ka baby rahega tu. (You are a little complaint box! Stop your complaints. You’ll always be a baby.)” Rudra called out to his father, complaining again. Rushil turned for just a second. Roshni cried out in horror.
“Rushil, aage dekhiye! (Rushil, look ahead!)” Rushil turned back, but it was too late. The truck hit them head-on. Their car spun violently. Dev pulled Rudra closer, holding on tight, terrified. Their mother looked at them, helpless with fear. Rudra tried to reach for her, but the car was spinning too fast.
Before he could touch her, the door flew open and his mother was thrown out. “Mumma!” Rudra screamed and jolted awake, drenched in sweat. The door burst open, and Dev rushed inside.
