Just Like Friends – Jenny Pineapple

The tension is gone. We can stand next to each other, joke around, be the friends we’ve always been. Whatever happened in that locker room, whatever it meant or didn’t mean, doesn’t have to change everything. Maybe it changed nothing at all. OceanofPDF.com Trey I hunch over my plate of nachos in the corner booth, systematically destroying Wells’ famous guacamole like it’s my job. Two hours of being “normal” with Dane has left me fucking exhausted.
Every touch, every friendly smile is like walking through a minefield blindfolded. One wrong step and boom. I’m back in that dark locker room with his hand down my pants. I stuff another loaded chip into my mouth, hoping the crunch will drown out the thoughts ricocheting inside my skull. The Rusty Anchor hums with celebration around me.
I’ve done my duty. Congratulated the happy couple, made small talk, laughed at all the right jokes. Now I’m taking a breather, hiding in plain sight while the party continues without me. It’s not that I’m not happy for Miller and Dawson. I am. They’re good guys who deserve this happiness. But watching them together, so comfortable in their skin, so unapologetically in love, stirs up something I’ve spent years burying. I grab another chip, this one loaded with extra jalapeños, hoping the burn might distract me from the way my heart keeps skipping whenever I catch sight of Dane across the room.
He’s been mingling—playing darts, giving away bear hugs, helping River clear some empty bottles from a table. Normal Dane stuff. Except every fifteen minutes or so, he finds his way back to me, throwing an arm around my shoulders or leaning in close to say something directly in my ear. And I’ve been pretending it doesn’t affect me.

The rec room at Station Thirteen pulses with laughter and music. Our first Halloween party in years. Captain Novak pulled strings to get another station covering our calls tonight, a reward for breaking the response time record two quarters running.
My crewmates mill around in various states of costumed ridiculousness, inhibitions lowered, everyone finally unwinding. I scan the room, searching for one particular face, and tell myself I’m not doing exactly that. My eyepatch slips again. This costume was a mistake, but at least I made an effort. Lieutenant Reese is across the room wearing just his uniform with a plastic badge that says “Stripper Police,” which is both lazy and confusing.
I take another swig of beer, feeling the slight burn in my throat. The rec room looks different tonight. Someone—probably Novak’s secretary—hung orange and black streamers from the ceiling and scattered plastic pumpkins on every surface. The ping-pong table’s been cleared of our usual mess and covered with a spread of food that’s way better than our normal fare. My attention snaps to the doorway as Cain Dawson struts in like he’s walking a runway.
Jesus Christ. The kid’s wearing what I can only describe as a slutty sailor outfit—navy blue shorts that barely cover his ass, paired with a tight cropped shirt showing off his abs. A little white hat sits at a jaunty angle on his blond curls. Several heads turn, but Dawson doesn’t seem to notice or care. That’s what I envy about him. Not the body, though the kid’s got a great one. But the complete lack of fucks he gives.
Dawson’s never apologized for who he is, not even once since I’ve known him.
