“Why wasn’t I informed ahead of time?” “You know it doesn’t happen that way, agent.” I scooted my chair back to the table. The sooner we wrapped this up, the sooner I could go back to my apartment and figure out what to do about Danielle. Agent Carswell waited for me to still myself. I didn’t need some wacko department full of shrinks to tell me where my head was at.

I rarely received a good report on my evals, but for the most part, I was by the book. Well, up until certain events took place, but they weren’t planned. They weren’t even pre-planned. I didn’t know Danielle was going to show up in my life and flip everything upside down. I could have grinned at the last thought but held it back.

Agent Moody probably wasn’t even dead. He was no doubt being removed from his dirty little apartment, at Motel Shitbox, and sent back to his cubicle in the so-called mental audit department, whatever that was. No wonder he was so annoying. “Let’s just get this done. You asked if I noticed anything weird about last night with Moody, and I mean, he’s an odd one as it is, so he didn’t do anything out of the ordinary; he is out of the ordinary.

That’s just my opinion, of course. Besides that, everything was routine. Give him kudos for me; I had no idea he was one of your guys. I can usually spot them. They’re not too comfortable about having to take out a target.” “He’s not with our department; I’m just required to include it in the assessment since it happened within the timeframe of the evaluation, and Agent Hall seems to be MIA.”

Hearing him say her name again felt like a punch to the gut. Why’s he so concerned with Danielle? “I’m confused. You’re just wondering how I’d react to losing an agent because of the eval, but you’re not being clear about Moody. He isn’t dead, he’s just one of yours, right?” “Ma’am, last night, Agent Moody apparently pointed his weapon at another agent named Falco.

Falco’s handler is your colleague, Agent Punshon.

Heh- heh Author’s note: As an independent author, who still considers herself a newbie to the craft, this story is by far (and so far) the one that stretched my comfort zones the most. I hope it is received in the way it’s intended—to entertain, shock, excite, and leave you smiling. Also…I have ten rescue cats who sit behind, beside, and in front of the screen for much of my time writing, waiting for me to leave the keyboard.

If you see any odd errors, like gggggggggggg somewhere, I apologize. They are sneaky little ones who will stomp across the keys any chance they get! At the place where the matted carpet ended, and worn kitchen linoleum began, Corrine knelt behind her seven-year-old daughter and whispered into her ear, “I’m not going to let you end up like me.” She knew she didn’t make good choices about the men she allowed in her home. She’d learned to accept that about herself, but she’d be damned if someone harmed her child and think they’d get away with it.

She wrapped her arms around her daughter’s frame, placing the .22 into her tiny hands, then carefully nudged her index finger onto the trigger. She steadied her child’s arms as she lifted them slowly.
