So much that if we didn’t look so different, people were convinced we’d shared a womb.” “I wouldn’t have guessed it.” “I don’t think anyone can. Not anymore.” This makes her lips pucker. “We were confused at what we’d found, and split to make sense of things. That’s when I saw my father coming around the corner. I tried to call out to Christian, but he got caught.” The memory makes my body writhe in agony. “When I ran to help him, Christian gestured for me to hide.

Knowing we’d both face hell if we were caught. However, instead of hiding away, I ran to my mother. Thinking she’d protect him. But I didn’t realise we’d unveiled a secret that should’ve died with Michael, and apparently, even us.” Theresa Varen. She was his dirty little secret.

Even thirteen years deceased. Chris and I laughed at how cliche it was to hide an entrance behind a wall of books, that moved in on itself, but after seeing our father enter the tunnels through the old library, we waited till the next evening to investigate. It’s almost ironic Angelina and my favourite place to be is the same rooftop. If she knew there were a shrine dedicated to her mother just three floors below, she’d consider me a psychopath for taking her there. Except, I do so because nobody goes there, and Christian wouldn’t dare.

Not after those events. I sigh. “Rather than helping Christian, my mother convinced me to wait in her room while she spoke to my father. But instead, she locked me away.” Angelina freezes. “I banged on the doors. Screamed like a lunatic. Tried to break through, but nothing worked. Her reasoning, when I threw myself out of the window, broke an arm, sprained my ankle, and passed out with a gash to the head, was that she’d rather have protected one son than lost both to her husband’s fury.”

Feeling my ears ring at the memory of that day’s terror, my confidence is destroyed as I pull up my sleeve. Angelina watching as I point out a scar, hard to identify under the tattoo of a phoenix. Risen from the ashes. She traces it. Her face distorting as if she experiences the pain, only to flinch when I hesitantly part my hair to reveal the scar from the gash that’d forced doctors to shave my head and give me sixteen stitches.

Moving my hand, she fixes my hair. Almost like it’ll erase the pain… it doesn’t. “Michael did something to Christian.

Part One C H A P T E R 1 Angelina Present day, London H ave mercy- she’ll have me behind bars before the morning caffeine has even kicked in. “He has a girl?!” She gasps. Creating binoculars with her hands. My cheeks aflame as people walk past with utter judgement in their eyes. As if almost getting arrested last night wasn’t enough.

She has to try our luck again by stalking a millionaire in broad daylight. The age of twenty-five may be old enough to be the mother of twin five-year-olds, but it definitely isn’t to spend a decade sharing a cell with someone who will surely attempt to cut my hair to thread themselves a blanket. “If you peak any further you’ll fall through the window, woman.”

I snap. “Step back, and stop embarrassing us. We already look silly as it is.” Nisrina huffs. The luscious waves of her silky, strawberry hair glowing under the dull, morning sun. “We’re going inside.” I’d rather choke on rice. Turning the other way, I lower my chin into my collar. More than ready to see the smile on my boss’s lips, even as I arrive late, sure to fuel the rumours that we’re having an affair. If he weren’t my fiancé’s childhood friend, I myself would question his friendliness.

“If you don’t want my knee in your stomach, you’ll get your grubby paws off of me.”
