Larger than I expected, even knowing he was a leopard. His eyes stayed that golden-brown, catching the sun as he shook out his new shape and turned to look at me. Waiting. I let the shift take me. My bobcat form was smaller, significantly smaller, but I’d never been self-conscious about it. Size wasn’t everything.

I was faster than most, quieter than all, and my night vision was impeccable. Stefan’s nose twitched as he took in my scent in this form. I did the same, breathing him in. His scent of musky and savory with a hint of metallic blood. As if his beast had went off hunting without him, though that was impossible. He turned and moved into the trees. Not running yet, just walking. An invitation.

I followed. Stefan picked a path through the palms and sea grape, his black form blending into the shadows between trees. I stayed a few lengths behind, watching how he moved. Powerful but not showy. He wasn’t trying to impress me. Good. I hated when alphas tried to impress me. He picked up speed gradually, and I matched him. My smaller frame darted through gaps he had to push through, and I found myself pulling ahead on the narrower trails. He didn’t seem bothered by it.

When the path opened up near the shore, he surged forward, and I let him take the lead again. We ran. Not toward anything, not away from anything. Just movement for the sake of it. My muscles burned in that satisfying way, my lungs filling with salty air and the green smell of the island.

Stefan’s tail flicked as he jumped a fallen log, and I went around it, faster. He noticed. His ears swiveled back toward me, and I could swear his leopard was amused. Catch me if you can. The thought formed without words, pure instinct, and I shot past him into the dense brush. He gave chase. This was different. Not the careful circling of earlier, not the assessment. This was play. I zigged through the undergrowth, using my size to my advantage, hearing him crash through behind me.

He was faster in open terrain, but here in the thick of it, I had the edge. I burst out onto a small beach and skidded to a stop, sand spraying. Stefan emerged seconds later, sides heaving, and for a moment we just stood there. Two predators on empty sand, the ocean blue and endless beyond.

He walked toward me. Slow, deliberate.
