I wanted to run him through. I still do.” Odette widened her eyes in panic. “Don’t do that! Never ever let him see you. He would curse you or hurt you, or maybe even kill you before you could blink if he knew you were here.” Especially since he kidnapped me to keep us apart… She didn’t know if he’d caught that part of the conversation with Rothbart before the paralyzing spell, but she certainly wasn’t going to be the one to bring it up.

As if on cue, Lander said, “Because I’m the reason he captured you and turned you into a swan?” Odette closed her eyes and sighed. “Yes.” He continued to massage her hands as he said dejectedly, “I’ve never felt more guilty of anything in my life.” Odette shook her head insistently.

“No! It is not your fault. Rothbart is culpable, not you. He is responsible for his own awful choices—and would have done the same if any other man paid me such attentions.” Lander smiled softly. “Thank you, Odette. I find it ironic that in his efforts to keep us apart, he inadvertently brought us closer together. He literally brought you to my doorstep.

Though I certainly don’t approve of his methods.” Odette laughed. “Yes, the fact that he brought me here, to Caledonia, is ironic. But I’m glad that of all the places in Caelia, this is where he chose.” Lander stilled at her words, then solemnly looked deeply into her eyes, despite the nudges and disapproving honks of her brothers. Odette felt her face flush under his scrutiny, her heart pounding slowly as she gazed back at him.

Not sure how to respond to his intensity, she said nothing further. “I am glad you are here,” he almost whispered as he continued to stare at her. One corner of his mouth smirked into his roguish grin. “It is true, then. Your heart really does belong to me.” The flirt!
