Lasair Queen Of The Flightless Dragons 2 – Martha Roo

“That’s the first time I’ve ever heard you openly admit you might not be able to hold up the world on your own. Big day in these parts. Usually you only take help by force and at the last possi- ble moment when everything is about to go south anyway.” Willow absently tapped the large scales on Eamon’s neck. “Rude, but accurate.” “You love a good tussle, gets your blood going.” “Not all the time.” Norman looked up from the book, staring at her just long enough.
“Okay, maybe always. I know how to play on a team, too.” “When it suits you. Even then, it’s a maneuver to get what you want.” “Fair. I didn’t start out this way. I was an easygoing toddler.” Norman snorted, but kept searching the grimoire. Willow felt her ire growing and absently tapped a hand on Eamon’s neck.
He opened his mouth and shot out a blast of freezing air aimed at Norman, frosting his eyebrows. “You’re only making my point, Willow.” Willow rubbed her hand on Eamon’s neck, her fingers dancing along the edges of the hard, flexible scales. “I knew I had magic in- side of me, but I was told to keep it to myself.
Show no one. Mom drilled that into me.” “Yeah, that may have been a slight overreaction. But to be fair, it wasn’t just your mother. The Camellia Society probably had a thing or two to do with that edict.” “Maybe. You know, I tried anyway.” “Like smoking under the bleachers. You want to try the forbidden.” “Exactly!” Willow put her hands on her hips, that familiar defiant cock to her head. “I would try spells I got off other magicals but I kept getting caught.”
“Let me guess, your version always went a little over the top.” “Something like that. Mom would lose her mind.” “It’s a hard thing watching a sibling die right in front of you.” He paused and looked up, giving Willow a hard look. “I suspect Annie knew you were a little more than a witch and she saw history repeat- ing itself.” “I wish I had all these years to practice.
What if I’m not enough?”

The walls were standing and the large doors remained, but the curved roof was shattered. The pieces of it were spread everywhere. It had become an oversized child’s game of red and grey pick-up-sticks with mostly broken and splintered parts. The red dragon, Lasair, stood just outside the wreckage growing more agitated, looking up at the silver dragon, Eamon, ducking in and out of the clouds. He pawed at the ground, breathing out glow- ing sparks that floated up in a column, catching the sunlight.
He spread out his wings, pushing back the few who had already made it to the barn. Willow felt the pull from Lasair to come down, look at things more clearly. An invitation to come and see through the fire and look at what’s happened. All of it. But she was doing her best to resist. It was the acrid smell of burning ash that the young alchemist no- ticed first, despite the obvious destruction. Willow Jenkins was too new at her craft as an alchemist to even think about manipulating the fire or the smoke.
There was no clear path through the new magic to bend them to her will and find some answers. The young witch was an unexpected alchemist. Something rare, a mysterious kind of magic, and the last of her kind. None of that was coming to mind. Stomp. Stomp. Lasair demanded attention but was still getting nowhere. Willow was too focused on one thought in a continuous loop.
Where is my grandfather? It was the smell that finally caught her attention.
