She didn’t like things out of her control. Stevie stared at Kasia, mouth hanging open. “Sam hasn’t called? Sent a message? Nothing?” Kasia shook her head, scanning the article. Police Chief Richard Harding condemned the violent act, stating, “Two brave men lost their lives to protect our city from street thugs and bootleggers. Their sacrifice, and the life of an innocent woman, will not be in vain. I will not rest until I’ve rooted out this nest of rats and exterminated every one of them.” “The Purples have to be lying low after this.

Who knows when Sam will reach out?” Kasia let out a heavy sigh. “Call the boys in for a meeting. I need everyone acting smart. Subtle drop-offs, no talking business in front of strangers. Act as if every move is being watched, because it might very well be.”

Kasia grabbed his arm. “Don’t relay any of this on the phone. Just call them in. Got it?” Stevie nodded. If he was offended that Kasia thought he might be sloppy enough to discuss business on a phone line, where someone could be listening in, he was gracious enough—or smart enough—not to show it.

“When do you want them in?” “Right now. As fast as they can get here.” “Right.” Stevie hesitated for a moment, his eyes fixed on her forehead. “Boss, you got, uh… you got something, right there.” He pointed between his own brows. Kasia touched her head, then looked down at her ink-stained fingers. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to push down the anger building inside her.

“Thanks.” She stood and headed towards the washroom. Her reflection showed a black mark, smeared between her eyes to her hairline. Kasia heaved a sigh. There was nothing like a leaky pen to remind her she was losing control, not just over work, but her entire life.
