As well as their originality and low mileage, what makes these two particularly intriguing is that they were built on the same day in February 1978, just six vehicles apart… N the secondhand and classic car market there are four words that are the holy grail: one owner, low mileage. It stands to reason: with few miles and a single owner, the better condition the car is likely to be in. If you can also find a fastidious owner who has documented everything that’s been done to the vehicle from its purchase to sale, then you’re likely to have found classic car gold.

Twelve years ago, back in late 2013, I found myself in the very fortunate position of being able to buy exactly that type of car. A year earlier, my friend Nick Rogers had asked me to look out for an early ¼ two-door Range Rover, as he was keen to buy one to complement his L405 Range Rover company car. As it happened, the perfect vehicle was for sale at the Essex-based dealer Creaksea Classics: a 1978 two-door Suffix F in Arctic White, which I had seen online. WMV 167S was a family-owned vehicle that had been sold to the dealer by the recently deceased owner’s son.

The original owner had bought it new from Beadle’s of Dartford, and it appears that the vehicle had been used extremely sparingly, primarily to tow the family caravan for touring holidays in the UK. The original Creaksea Classic advertisement included this wonderful phrase as part of the description: ‘It is a fantastic Range Rover, and I can almost say, hand on heart, that I will never find another one like this’. High praise. Nick went to take a look, and once he had done the deal and brought it home, I was keen to check it out myself.

It was stunning. Here was a car that had clearly been loved, and despite being 35-years old (in 2013), the interior was one of the best-preserved examples that I had ever seen. I kicked myself for not buying it personally, but asked Nick to give me first refusal if ever he decided to sell it. That moment came sooner than expected, as a few months later Nick was offered a slightly more collectable, low-mileage, one family-owned Range Rover Suffix A in Masai Red.

Nick wanted to replace the Suffix F with the earlier Suffix A, so he rang me and asked if I’d like to buy the white car.

As you may have seen in the February issue, I’ve been busy pulling the old naturally-aspirated diesel engine out of ùŁŕŝŜř_úāÄúƕ§ú½ŌĦĦÝúÓ§ŖŔŔ½ÝĬúÝĦ that I bought to boost the power and useability of the Land Rover for daily use, and for longer camping trips. I love my Series III V8, but sometimes you need a vehicle that doesn’t guzzle fuel at the same rate as an aircraft carrier.

Anyway, there have been some hiccups along the engine conversion journey, but by far the biggest was the complete lack ăÒăÝòēĖÄĝĝĬĖÄĻÙÄúĦÙÄƳúÄĻƴŖŔŔ½ÝÓăĦ up to temperature. I checked all the usual suspects, and the news was not good. One of the bearings that the camshaft spins in has shifted in the engine block, so the oil has no resistance through what should be a small gallery when it gets warm and PHOTO: MARTIN DOMONEY Gearing up DIGITAL EDITIONS Access Land Rover Monthly’s extensive digital library including the latest issue and all issues ½§ĦÝúÓ¶§·ïĦăU§ŁŖŔŕřƚ•ÝĝÝĦƔbit.ly/lrmdigi22.
