Left For Dead – David J Gatward (1)

‘He tried to use the laces as Prusiks.’ ‘I’m not going to pretend to know what that is.’ Harry stood up, the folder under his arm. ‘Thanks,’ he said, as Sowerby sent another yawn into the world. ‘I’ll let you know if we find anything else,’ said Sowerby, her words stretched out by the yawn. ‘I’ll see you out.’ She pushed herself to her feet, weariness in each movement. ‘I think your time would be better spent having a nap,’ said Harry.
Sowerby slumped back down. ‘Good advice,’ she said. ‘Speak soon, I’m sure.’ And with that, Sowerby leaned her head back against the wall and closed her eyes. A few minutes later, Harry was driving back towards Hawes, his mind chock-full of information and detail, but still none of it making any real sense.
OceanofPDF.com Detective Constable Jen Blades would much rather have jogged the route from the Community Centre to their destination, but neither she nor Ethan were exactly dressed for it. Arriving at someone’s front door sweaty and breathing heavily wasn’t generally the best way to set a good example. In fact, coupled with the showing of a police ID, it could fairly send people into a panic.
So, she had accepted that it was to be just a brisk walk across Beelah Bank, following the flagstone path from Hawes, and along up to Gayle. It’s a pretty little walk, Jen thought, as she followed Ethan, his shoes clip-clopping on the stone. Each step was taken carefully, as the day was cold, and ice had stretched into thin, brittle mirrors across the path. Down to their left, Gayle Beck flowed over scalloped rocks, its edges feathered with ice. ‘Should’ve brought my camera,’ Ethan said, and pointed up to where Whether Fell rested in the morning sun, wearing layers of fog like a lace petticoat.
‘It’s nice to just appreciate the view and not worry about capturing it with anything other than your eyes, though, isn’t it?’ Jen said. ‘I sometimes wonder if we’re all so concerned with taking a photo or a little video of something, that we don’t appreciate the moment for what it is.’ ‘I hear you,’ Ethan agreed. ‘Went to a concert last year. Can’t even remember who it was. Worst time ever. Not because the band was rubbish, but because of all the phones.

But he had no idea why he was here, or who it was that had brought him. He shivered, not just because the night was colder than that old lead mine he’d been exploring a few days ago, but also because he wasn’t exactly dressed for the weather.
Hadn’t even been given the chance to, either. The gun going off over his head had made it more than clear there was no time for a quick tour of his wardrobe. ‘Move.’ The voice came from a silhouette standing in front of him. The face was hidden behind a scarf, which muffled the voice and made it hard to understand. ‘At least give me a jacket,’ said Bill. ‘There’s one on the back seat of the Landy.
You can hang it over my shoulders. Don’t even have to untie my wrists.’ ‘I said, move.’ Bill glanced around, had no idea where to go, what was wanted of him. ‘Where, exactly? I don’t under—’ The barrel of the shotgun swept out of the darkness and crashed into the side of Bill’s head. Sparks burst in his brain as a sharp pain rammed its way through his skull with the violence of a spear thrust.
‘Move! Over there! You know exactly where! Just …’ The barrel came in again, but Bill managed to dodge out of the way just in time. ‘Okay,’ he said, ‘I’ll move. But what’s this about? Who are you? What do you want?’ Bill had so many more questions, but confusion and panic were spinning around his head, hand-in-hand with their dance partner, terror. The noise of it all was just too much to allow him to think straight.
