Conway Stone We do have a lot of problems in this country, but this place is still a land of opportunity even for people of color. I’m too old. Mrs. Johnnie Jones announced her intention to return to cob lege at age 75. “What are you going to do with the degree?”

her family asked. “I’m going to put that degree on the wall and salute it every day.” That was 9 years ago. Today at age 84, Mrs. Jones has graduated from the University of Louisville with honors. She did not let race, gender or age get in her way. Have you ever heard of “ram jet ventilation?”

It’s a term to refer to the type of breathing sharks do. Sharks don’t have lungs and muscles that expand and contract so they can breathe. Instead they have 507 gills that allow water to pass through their bodies. The trick is they must keep moving so that water is forced through their gills and thus into their bodies. If they stop moving, they die. (Don’t ask me how they sleep.) We as people are that way. We must keep moving or we die as well.

Stop moving, start complaining, retire to a rocking chair or stop dreaming and your body atrophies and you turn from muscle to fat. Your mind atrophies as well. It moves from sharp to dull and your spirit grows cold and cynical. The message is simple ‘ dream or die. With dreams and goals, we can keep ourselves moving and growing much longer than we ever thought possible. Marie Wilcox’Little is a great example.

She is a daily swimmer at age 73. Roy Erlandson began competitive swimming at age 60 and still swims at age 82. Marian Haas Anderson enjoys snow skiing at age 74. Her com¬ ments on her age, “Each day to me is a new adventure, unrelated to what has gone before or what will follow. I am optimistic about my capabilities and intolerant of the limitations my bones would impose. Life for the most part has been very good to me, but if I had it to do over again I would do it entirely differently just for fun.”

What an attitude! Yes, you can do many things no matter how Dream High 59 old you are. Too old? NEVER! 1 love the story of the Marin Rowing Association that enjoys rowing for fun as a sport. The average age of the members is 76.

A tennis racket has a retail price of $65.00. It has an intrinsic value of only $2.00. But when placed in the hands of Monica Seles, it’s worth $3,000,000 in the Australian Open. A baseball bat has a retail price of $65.00. Its intrinsic value is only $2.00. But when placed in the hands of Ken Qriffey, Jr., it’s worth $9,200,000 a year. A programmed computer disk will retail for $14.95. Its intrinsic value is only $0.39. But in the hands of Bill Qates, it’s worth $40,000,000,000 according to Forbes Magazine.

The same is true with your dreams… in my hands they are worthless… in your boss’ hands they are worthless… in your children’s hands they are worthless… But in your hands the dreams are priceless… in your hands your dreams can create something new, they can design a new life, they can help someone in need and they can create a new world!
