I ask, hoping it was a good gasp. “Are you kidding? I love it! You really outdid yourself!” I stop Acorn and jump off, tying him to the horse post. I help Dylan off of Buttercup, catching her as she swings off. Our bodies brush against each other, causing butterflies to form in my stomach. “Thank you,” Dylan whispers as I take the reins from her. I tie Buttercup next to Acorn, then Dylan grabs my hand, pulling me toward the picnic.

“How did you do all of this?” she asks. “I have my ways,” I answer and let her sit down first before joining her and opening all of the food. It looks fresh, like it was recently put out, which is good. Dylan fixes herself a little plate as I pour the juice. “What made you ask me out?” she asks. “I like you and you’re all I thinkable about. You don’t know it yet but we’re meant to be.”

I don’t want to come off too strong but it’s true. Dylan consumes every thought in my head, I am sure one day I will marry her. I don’t think liking her is much of a secret now, and anyways, Ambrose is hooking up with her best friend, so I would consider us even. I notice Dylan’s odd, disapproving look. “It’s true. I’ve liked you for a while. I just finally got the confidence to ask.” “But I’m not your type,” she says.

“And what do you think is my type?” I wonder if I put out a certain narrative—I didn’t know she thought that. “I don’t know. Pretty, athletic, skinny, maybe blonde.” Is she fucking with me right now?! I’ve never even touched a blonde. “You’re wrong. I’m only into you,” I say. Dylan doesn’t say anything at first; she just dips her strawberry into the chocolate sauce.
