Lizzys Curious Talent – Jessica L Jackson

Mr. Bingley exclaimed. “Our copies have not yet arrived from the publishers, so, of course, we are behind times. This is a chance, is it not?” “We have heard how wonderfully the story is written,” Lizzy said, smiling widely, obviously excited. “You naughty puss,” Aunt Sophia said, grinning. “The package arrived this morning and you told no one?” Georgiana waved one hand at Mr. Kearn. “I told one person, but I managed to keep the secret to myself, otherwise.”
“Shall we begin, Miss Darcy?” the estate manager asked, picking up the volume before him. “I am ready.” “Mellor will bring tea shortly,” she promised him and he smiled back at her. Georgiana sighed inwardly with pleasure. “So your mouth will not get too dry,” she explained and then wished she had not since the reason was so obvious. I am going to sit and immerse myself in the story. I am not going to act like a silly school girl any more. I will not display my feelings so that Fitz notices.
I will not… And Mr. Kearn began. His mellifluous voice calmed her and she folded her hands in her lap and watched him read. “‘Guy Mannering; or the Astrologer,’” he read, and then explained. “It is written anonymously. It begins with an excerpt from Lay of the Last Minstrel. ‘Tis said that words and signs have power O’er sprites in planetary hour; But scarce I praise their venturous part, Who tamper with such dangerous art.” Mr. Kearn continued for three hours, pausing occasionally for a sip of hot tea.
He stopped once an hour for his listeners to discuss what they had heard so far. Everyone stood and took a turn about the room before they settled for the next hour of reading. During the second break, Lizzy approached Georgiana. “Mr. Kearn is a remarkable reader,” Lizzy said, shaking her head in wonder. “The characters come alive as he speaks. I do not believe I have ever heard anyone better.” A flush of pleasure swept through Georgiana’s person, almost as though the compliment had been meant for herself.
Her pride in Mr. Kearn could not be matched. “Indeed. When we have performed amateur theatrics, he is a great favorite to play the most dramatic parts.” “I am not surprised,” Lizzy said, looking at her searchingly. Have I betrayed myself? Does she suspect? Lizzy sat down in her seat as soon as Mr. Kearn returned to his.
Something magical happens every time Miss Elizabeth Bennet paints or sketches an image. However, she cannot control how her talent is revealed in her art. Lizzy is determined to live as an independent lady and needs her talent to provide the income for her dream. But, she has to be so very, very careful that no one discovers her secret. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy wants Miss Bennet, a notable artiste, to paint a portrait of his beloved sister, Georgiana, and he is willing to pay handsomely.
She, however, refuses to paint adults. He does not understand her reluctance. Darcy is determined to discover whatever it is that Miss Bennet is hiding. Copyright © 2020 by Jessica L. Also, I have drawn upon memories of playing cards with many of them over the years: Norwegian whist with any three other family members who would join in, as well as crib, and Chinese crib, with my grandmother, my mother, and my siblings. I spent many hours playing cards with my best friend, Susan Lunn. I taught her Chinese crib and she taught me how to play crib-to-lose. She died in a car accident while I was writing this book and I have honored her with a place in my story for her game.
