That afternoon it was time to meet Sam again. Lauren was actually quite looking forward to it- it had been a laugh last time although she was embarrassed when she remembered how awkwardly it had ended. Because of this, she started off a little shy but she loosened up as it became clear that Sam had put their last meeting out of his mind and was being his usual friendly self.

She was enjoying herself so much that the time flew by and she was shocked when three hours had passed. She said goodbye to Sam and headed outside. As she was walked, she checked her phone. There were two texts from Damon. The first said, See you in the bathroom in five minutes. It was from an hour ago but she had been so absorbed in the project and in discussing different laws with Sam that she had missed it completely. The second said simply: Come to my place when you’re done.

Feeling guilty about missing the first text, she hurriedly made her way to his apartment and knocked. “Come in,” Damon called out. Lauren entered and immediately noticed the object in the middle of the room- she stared at it in disbelief. “You don’t know what it is? I’m not sure if I believe that, you did write all about it in one of your delightful stories.

Your poor heroine spent all night on one, if I remember correctly.” She did recognise the object- it was a sawhorse, but she had never seen one in real life. She remembered the story in which she had written about it… and how she had imagined herself using it. “This is what it is about, isn’t it? Trying out the things you’ve fantasised?” Despite herself, she felt a tingle of excitement in her belly. She held his gaze, and nodded, feeling a small frisson of fear as well.

“Then strip.” When she had done as he had asked, he took her arm and guided her to the sawhorse, which looked as if he had made it himself, rough but sturdy.

She had been so full of excitement to finish school and move away from her small hometown.

She had been accepted into a good college, and had eagerly chosen to study law; it seemed a gateway to a glamorous life, buzzing with rush and purpose. Instead, she felt as if everything she had hoped for had been a total pipedream. Nothing was as she had imagined it! She had thought that law would be more engaging- lively debates and triumphal moments of victory in court. Instead, it was endless poring over pieces of legislation that used far too many words than necessary. The class was a sink or swim environment, and her classmates were all too ready to push each other under (and hold them there until all signs of life had gone).

It was nerve-wracking to speak up in class, as someone was sure to loudly and smugly put forward a counter argument that was designed to belittle the speaker. It felt poisonous, and she had learnt to keep her head down, complete the assignments, and spend as little time there as possible. If this is what she could expect from the career, she would most definitely be re- thinking her choices! More frustrating than this was her plummeting hopes of a college romance. She had been there for almost a year already, and nothing was even on the horizon.

When she arrived at college, she was inexperienced, but was more than ready for that to change. Instead… well, there had been Todd. She had met Todd at the volleyball club. She had never been sporty but had gone along hoping to meet new people. Todd had been nice (if a little boring), but when he kissed her passionately at a party, she had let herself be swept along.

They had gone to his dorm room and although his level of enthusiasm couldn’t be faulted, it was, unfortunately, completely at the expense of Lauren’s pleasure. It had been energetic, brief, and had left her feeling very, very dissatisfied. Maybe her expectations had been too high… It’s just that she knew exactly what she wanted. She loved erotica and had been reading that kind of stuff for years.
