Leviathan – Brian McBride

“You’re awake.” Lydia rolled her head toward the voice. Lena Clark stood in the doorway, her slender frame shadowed until she stepped forward into the reach of the lantern’s light. Blinking, Lydia forced a smile. To remember that she’d already promised the woman forgiveness, a gift she didn’t intend to rescind.
“Thanks to you,” said Lydia, eyes locked on her mother as she approached. The woman crouched in front of her, then turned to Tommy. “Can we have a minute?” Tommy looked to Lydia, who nodded, then stood to leave. “I’ll be right outside.” When he was gone, Lena offered a slight smile. “I know I’m not in any position to say so, but… I think it’s time you and Thomas put all this behind you.” Lydia’s smile faltered. She blinked. “There’s a reason I kept this life from you.”
Holding up a hand, Lydia shook her head. “Let me stop you right there. You haven’t been around, Mom.” The word caught in her throat. “You haven’t been part of my life for a long time. You don’t get to come along and think you know best for me when you don’t even know me.” “You almost died, Lydia. Next time, it could be worse.”
“Men have died for less,” Lydia managed, pursing her lips. “Whether you like it or not, this is my world now, too. I can’t pretend that things haven’t changed.” Dark hair in a ponytail that swept down one shoulder, Lena sighed, shoulders sagging. “One day, when you have kids, you’ll understand.
But I am asking you, Lydia, please… give up the chase.” It would’ve been easy to dismiss her mother’s words, but there was a note of truth in them that she couldn’t just ignore. But no matter how real the danger, there was something far more precious to her than her life.
“And what about Reid?” asked Lydia. “He’s made his decision.” Lydia reached out a hand and rested it atop her mothers. “You and I both know that bad decisions don’t have to be the end.” Lifting her eyes to meet Lydia’s, she blinked, tears glistening. As she wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand, Tommy and Immy entered. Lydia smiled, then frowned when she saw the pale look on his face. “What is it?” she asked. Tommy held up a photograph, aiming it at Lena rather than her.

With a killer plot that will keep you up late, this story is one for this generation to latch onto and gives readers not just relatable characters, but ones that are so real they could be us.
It doesn’t shy away from the searching questions our generation is asking and gives answers that will leave you filled instead of empty – all encapsulated in a story that will leave you with tears and a pounding pulse.” – Victoria Lynn, author of The Chronicles of Elira “A masterful continuation to the Mammoth series, Leviathan picks up right where Titan left off. We start to see how fractured the Jailbirds have become. Brokenness, redemption, and overcoming fear are a few of the powerful themes McBride weaves among the action, clues, and questions the Birds must face in order to reach their prize.
Each page of Leviathan will have you gasping then laughing in turn, and by the end, will have you on the edge of your seat.” – Anna Augustine, author of The Tales of Taletha “Leviathan is a breathtaking ride, a quest for truth where loyalty and friendship are found to be more valuable than gold and the most dangerous of secrets are worth bringing to light.
The Jailbirds are my jam and I highly recommend this series to any mystery adventure lover.” – Laurisa Brandt, author of Birthright of Scars “Amid harrowing escapes and mind-blowing twists, the Jailbirds grapple with grief and healing in this epic high-stakes installment! McBride’s immersive aesthetic drops you right into a continuing adventure that feels both fresh and nostalgic. Leviathan balances the adrenaline rush with deep truths that will keep you riveted till the last page!”
– Morgan Giesbrecht “Upon finishing Leviathan, I designated myself an honorary Jailbird. And once you’ve read the thrilling tale for yourself, I believe you will too.
