Love Me Twice – Angie Hayes

I didn’t have to beg for food or sleep with the roaches. Uncle Cliff worked for the City of Miami Sanitation as a garbage man, and Aunt Vanessa was a school bus driver. From the stories I used to hear about my old boy, I couldn’t believe that he and Uncle Cliff were brothers. They seemed opposite. Uncle Cliff used to be in the game, though, but got out after he got his shot up over a short package.
He said that shit was enough for him to fly straight. My daddy, on the other hand, just didn’t give a fuck. His ass had been shot at, stabbed, and got his ass whopped plenty of times, but that still didn’t stop him from crazy shit until it finally cost him his life.
You can pretty much say that I grew up in a two-parent household. My uncle and aunt didn’t live in Overtown. They lived closer to the city. And although drugs and crime were still there, it was still better than Overtown. I had rules, discipline, and some structure that they tried to provide. However, as I got older, I started to see how the niggas from around the way were rolling.
I got an allowance every week, but that shit would only get me some snacks off the ice cream truck and corner store. I was mesmerized by seeing the dope boys riding ’round with the gold rims, beat out in their Donks, the chains, and the bitches flocking behind them. They were getting that fast money, and I wanted in. I got put on game when I turned fourteen.
A nigga named Chico, who was known from around the way, used to always be posted up at the park with a few of his homeboys. Chico was known as the go-to guy for the best weed, and he constantly had niggas coping from him. One day, I was out there on the court with Malik getting a game in, and I spotted five creeping around the corner in their car trying to roll up.
I don’t know what made me do it, but I called a quick timeout, ran up to Chico, and told him that five was coming. Them boys quickly got the fuck up out of there. About three days later, I saw him posted up at the corner store, and he dapped me up for looking out for him.
