As well as the one seen here used as a placemat with a carrot cutlery holder, a second looks over its shoulder, and a third has a cute bunny head. Whether you’re working with strips or not, our Triangle-in-a-Square template will soon become a favourite. You can easily cut both the large centre triangle and the smaller side triangles from strips using the template, then simply sew them together to finish your blocks. Alternatively, it’s perfect for precise fussy cutting to show off gorgeous fabrics. Designer (and our columnist, see p82) Sarah Ashford will show you how: she has used the template to make a simple – but stunning – cushion, complete with cheerful floral prints and simple hand quilting.

While Sarah has shown off these blocks with simple borders, there are many ways to use the template. Its different sizes mean you could use the triangles to make pointed borders by sewing them in rows, or even a simple star block – try sewing four triangles around a centre square in a 9-patch design.
