I quickly wiped my face, pulled on a clean jumper, brushed my hair and finished off with some tinted lip balm and a spritz of body spray. ‘I’m in my room,’ I called. I heard their footsteps come up the stairs and then there was a knock at my door. ‘Come in,’ I said as casually as I could manage. Molly and Poppy opened the door and stood there looking dead guilty. ‘We’re really sorry, Lotts,’ said Poppy, ‘We didn’t tell you we were seeing Amber because we were worried it might upset you.’

‘We’re sooooooooo sorry,’ continued Molly. ‘I know bumping into you like that made it look bad …’ I sighed. ‘It did look bad. It felt like you were lying and doing it behind my back. And I know I said maybe you guys should make friends with Amber, but I didn’t know you were going to hang out with TUMGG too.’ ‘We didn’t plan on that either,’ said Poppy.

‘They just always seem to be there.’ ‘It’s not that we like them or anything,’ protested Molly, ‘but if we’re going to try to get Amber back, we’ll probably have to hang out with them a bit.’ ‘A bit?!’ I exclaimed. ‘You both went totally AWOL on me and Jess yesterday.’ ‘I think that was my fault,’ said Poppy sadly.

‘I was so happy that Amber was talking to me again that I think I got a bit overexcited.’ I felt myself softening. ‘I get it – but I’d rather you’d have been honest about it.’ Poppy nodded. ‘I know, and you are SO right, but we were trying not to hurt your feelings.’ Molly sat down on the edge of my bed. ‘And, stupidly, I think we hurt them even more.’ ‘You did,’ I said. ‘Will you forgive us?’

asked Poppy with a hopeful smile on her face. ‘I’m not sure,’ I said, but I knew it didn’t sound convincing. Man, it was almost impossible to stay mad at these two. ‘What if we told you we had KitKat Chunkys?’ Molly grinned and pulled a couple of multipacks out of her bag. ‘I’ve actually already had one,’ I said, folding my arms and pouting but struggling to stop the smile escaping from the corners of my lips. ‘Since when do you only eat ONE KitKat Chunky?’

said Poppy, like it was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard. ‘Also,’ said Molly, ‘you’ll have definitely had more than one already!’ I quickly picked up all the wrappers from my bedroom floor. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ I said, laughing. Then we all sat on my bed, ate KitKats, played with the hammies, and the girls filled me in on their afternoon. They went to get manicures at a posh hotel – apparently Amber paid and it was REALLY amazing (apart from me not being there, obvs).

It’s particularly concerning because Mum goes back to work soon and Bella is going to start at Happy Teddies Nursery, where she will be free to inflict her vampirish reign on the other unsuspecting babies.

She has eight teeth now, and I know this because I counted the number of indents she left on my arm this morning! You see, I was just minding my own business … watching TV on the sofa … and she waddled over, clamped her jaws on my left arm and WOULD NOT let go. I tried to pull her off, but unfortunately she has a super-firm grip, and the more I tried to prise her mouth open, the harder she chomped down.

I might add that she was also squealing with delight! Eventually, Mum appeared to find out what all the commotion was. ‘Awww,’ she said, looking at us lovingly. ‘What do you mean, awww?’ I said. ‘It’s not at all awww. She’s trying to take a chunk out of my arm, and it actually REALLY hurts!’ ‘Oh, I see …

I thought she was kissing you. Bella, it’s not very kind to bite, is it?’ said Mum. ‘EEEE!’ squealed Bella. ‘Mum, she doesn’t understand you – just get her off!’ ‘I’m trying to practise gentle parenting, Lottie.’ ‘What does that even mean?’ ‘It means staying calm and rational,’ Mum explained.

Then she turned to Bella and said in a really gentle voice, ‘We don’t bite, do we? Because biting is –’ ‘EEEEEEEEEEE!’ squealed Bella again. ‘– not very kind and it can –’ ‘EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!’ ‘Muuuuuuum, it’s hurting!’ Mum sighed and tried (and struggled) to remove Bella from my arm.
