Love From Scratch – Nina High

Besties with the art Beyonce? Of course he is. I start laughing at how ridiculous this all is. I don’t exist in this world. I wouldn’t even be hired to cater in this world. “What’s so funny?” He asks as we walk to his car. “Just how regular I am amongst your extraordinary family friends. It’s a good thing I’ve dressed the part because I know I don’t belong.” Draymond stops walking and turns to face me, cupping my face in his hands. “You belong everywhere you are.
You don’t shy away from anyone. You deserve to be in the same space as these people. What Mona does with paint, you do with food. Don’t put yourself down like that. You’re the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever met. And I already know you’re the most beautiful woman at the Spectrum Art House.” I giggle at his compliment. “We aren’t even at the Spectrum Art House yet.”
I step into the open door of the black SUV. Draymond walks to the other side and gets in. Rich closes my door, and we are on our way. “You really look unspeakably amazing today.” Draymond tells me, running a hand along my arm. The feel of his touch on my skin makes me shiver. “Tuxedos suit you. You’ll have women trying to hang off of you all night long.”
“No, I won’t. The only woman I’m interested in tonight–at all–is you.” He tells me with an intensity in his eyes that warms me at my core. A comfortable silence falls upon us, and we arrive at our destination soon after. Draymond steps out and comes around to open my door. There’s a red carpet and a step and repeat.
Now, I know this is out of my league. Where are these pictures even going? “Are we walking the carpet and stopping for pictures?” I ask him. “Yes, ma’am! Show off that glam!” “I’ve never done this before.” I whisper, nerves taking over. He takes my hand and nods, leading me to the flashing lights. All the while, I’m trying to remember what my smile looks like.
Do I open my eyes too wide? Is there lipstick on my teeth? Draymond gives my hand a gentle squeeze. “You look perfect. Let them capture that. I bet you’ll make the cover of the style section tomorrow.” He raises his eyebrows, making me smile. “Draymond!’ “Draymond Martin! Over here!” The photographers are relentless. This is tv shit I think as I school my features to be in the moment instead of overthinking the moment.
“Draymond, who is your date?” “Amaya Moore, the owner and head chef of Savor restaurant. You should check it out!” He says before placing a kiss on my cheek and leading us down the carpet and into the venue. He plugged my restaurant to the paparazzi.

OceanofPDF.com Chapter 1: Amaya “This shit isn’t working!” The TikTok video I’m working on isn’t flowing the way I need it to. I’m trying to get the right angles on these southern fried salmon croquettes. I know people are going to love it, if they know it’s here. I’m combining two of the best foods ever. But if this video doesn’t look right, the croquettes could come out looking like a pile of bread crumbs, and no one will want to come in and eat that.
Savor is my baby. My one true love, and my soulmate. All I need in this life is for my restaurant to be successful. And I know that all I need to be successful is to catch Kel Lake’s eye. If he comes in here and gives Savor his Hot Spot rating, I will blow up, and Savor will be saved. Kel’s posts about his love of anything salmon all the time, so these croquetes could be our ticket. I’ve been a chef almost all my life.
Great Gramma taught me everything I needed to know about cooking. She used to have me on one of those short ladders in her kitchen cracking eggs and using her standing mixer when I was about 4. Now, at 34, I’m living my dream. I own this restaurant, and I make delicious fusions of southern comfort foods fused with French cuisine.
But with this economy, business is down. People aren’t eating out as much, and food costs are through the roof.
