Have you ever been trapped in a life where your freedom and security come with a caveat? To know that a single misstep – an act that hurt no one – could plunge you into danger with no path of return? For somebody to decree that an insignificant act, a small moment of defiance, would ruin not just you, but every woman who comes after you?

Only one word describes that behaviour: controlling. I cannot help but point out that Adam bore no such responsibility. It’s a violence I don’t appreciate. What happened was: I grew tired of being subservient. No beast influenced me – I am not nearly as weak as your stories suggest. I knew what I was doing, and I did it of my own volition. And then I was punished for daring to be disobedient. Eve.

It was never about the apple. 1kitap1.com/en She Who Swallowed a Universe Few things are as unnerving as a Bone Woman staring you down, assessing whether or not you will die. I’ve experienced it only once, when I accompanied Pa to the compound as a child. We arrived at a foolish time – the sun was in the middle of the sky, and then we had to join a long line for several hours on our feet.

Pa gave me two copper coins for the dessert vendors making their way up and down the line, and I was thrilled when it turned out I had enough to buy us two skeins of spiced goat milk, still cool from being buried in the sand overnight. That day I had badly wanted to wear Tema’s green skirt to make the journey. At first, we struck a secret deal – half my cuts of meat at night- meal for a whole week in exchange for it.

Tema drove a hard bargain, just like Ma. But when she saw me put it on – saw the way it quietened me – she changed her mind and told me I could have it whenever I wanted. No payment needed. Something was different after that day. We never spoke about it, but whenever Tema hugged me, she did it much harder than she used to. ‘I’m trying to push all my good thoughts into your chest,’ was all she’d say.

I knew time was running out for me and that wrap skirt. I was growing taller by the day and soon it would not reach my ankles and that would be that. In any case, Ma did not let me wear the skirt.
