A Corpse In A Locked Room – Benedict Brown (1)

There was even a visitors’ book. “Funny sort of hobby,” Dean muttered as we took a solemn turn of the room. I noticed that there was no explanation of how the family had made their money in the first place. The Castletons had traded slaves between Africa and Europe, but that wasn’t mentioned in the long introductory plaque by the door. But then, this museum hadn’t been designed to provide an overview of the family’s history. It was a tribute which heavily focused on the last century and, in particular, on Elizabeth’s deceased husband, Matthew.
Fifty different versions of him were displayed around the room, his cool gaze and unsmiling features impossible to avoid. It was as though he was following me and it gave me the creeps. “It’s like a shrine,” I said, drawing alongside my friend as he examined the largest print of Matthew Ogilvie. “Or a tomb,” Dean suggested with a shudder of his own. The temperature in the room felt about ten degrees cooler than anywhere else in the house.
“How did he die anyway?” I thought for a moment, to recall the circumstances when I was six or seven years old. “I can’t really say for sure. I know that he got ill quite suddenly. He died a few years after Tedwin was born. He was a bit of a cold fish. We used to see them at family functions when I was really little, but Elizabeth stopped coming after he died.” “So, who was he, this Matthew bloke?”
He pointed to a framed certificate from the company the dead man had owned. “Greybook Consulting, what was that?” “He did something for the government and then became a private contractor. That’s all I know. Mum would be able to tell you more.” Dean let out a cheerful snort. “Izzy are you serious?” I didn’t understand what he was getting at and let him talk.
“‘He did something for the government before becoming a private contractor’? I’m pretty sure you just described a spy.” It was my turn to laugh. I was about to ask him what he knew about such things when I remembered that he owned a company that made spy gadgets. “Do you seriously think so?” He paused and looked around at the photos. “Yes, actually, I do.” He pointed at a small picture, high up on the wall.
“You see that man on the left?

To existing readers – let’s get back to it! 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One “It was like kissing my brother.” “You don’t have a brother.” For such a creative person, Ramesh can be incredibly literal at times. I tried again. “I know that. I mean… Imagine kissing your sister, that’s what it felt like.” “Seriously, Izzy?” His voice rose in disgust.
“Why would you even put such a thought in my head?” I watched as he played out this nightmare scenario, his face contorting and his eyebrows rippling like tiny waves. We were sitting in a café beside Camden Lock where I’d just finished up another case for the world renowned ‘Private I Detective Agency’. It wasn’t quite as illustrious- Ooh, fancy word!
Look at Izzy, everybody! She’s so smart and clever and knows all the words. Be quiet, brain! It wasn’t quite as impressive as some of our other cases, but as the old saying goes, ‘small businesses who pay rent in central London can’t be choosers.’ Mrs Snuffles the cat didn’t stand a chance against the great Izzy Palmer.
