A Game Of Murder – M R G Davies

It doesn’t make sense for Grey to have lured Keren away as he’s now become the second victim.’ Bella shuddered. ‘Oh, don’t say that.’ ‘What, victim?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘Because, dear Harrison, it’s a stark reminder that two people are dead in the chapel and the person who killed them is chatting away to the rest of the guests in there.’ She pointed towards the main house.
Fforde could feel a familiar sense of trying to wrestle with mist. Among the people mourning the death of Keren Lowe was someone who had recently dispatched Hemingford Grey to join her in the ranks of the unalive. Who they were, and what possible reason they might have to do such a thing, were questions beyond his comprehension.
Fortunately, he had a few sharp-minded fellow sleuths standing around who might just be able to help. ‘Why would anyone want to kill the gift shop manager?’ he asked, his voice betraying the horror that was starting to sink in at the sight of the second body of the day. ‘Why indeed,’ intoned Professor Stone gravely.
‘He had intimated to me this morning that the house held secrets – and I’m not talking about the priest holes and inscriptions. Maybe he knew too much about something he shouldn’t have.’ ‘What do you mean?’ asked Lauren timidly. ‘I mean, maybe he had learned of one of those secrets, and the person whose secret it was didn’t like him knowing.’ ‘So they killed him?’ Bella sounded impressed.
‘It’s a theory.’ Fforde was less complimentary. ‘So is the notion that he wandered into the woods, ran into that film location manager, who’d got lost in the snow and gone mad since setting off for help and murdered Hemingford thinking he was a serial killer escaped from a nearby lunatic asylum.’ ‘Now you’re just being silly,’ said Bella.
