A Grand Escape – Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Soon they were all asleep. Marco was not sure how long they had slept—whether minutes, hours, or days, but when he woke it was still dark, the loft was lit only by moonlight, and three pairs of eyes shown from out of the shadows. He rose stiffly to a sitting position and looked around. He could just make out the shapes of Texas, Boots, and Elvis, all waiting, it seemed, all watching.
Carlotta was still asleep. He nudged Polo uneasily. Texas leaned down from the seat of the old rocker. “Well, well, well,” he said. “Are we all dry and warm and comfy? Are our tummies full?” “Yes, indeed!” said Polo, yawning. “Absolutely.” But Marco’s heart beat all the harder. “Good!” Texas Jake told them. “Because you are about to receive your First Great Mystery.” Marco swallowed. Polo snapped to attention. Carlotta stirred and opened her eyes. “Maybe you can read,” Texas Jake said, looking straight at Marco, “but to solve the Three Great Mys- teries we will give you, you also have to be fast and clever.
Are you ready?” Marco nodded. Polo nodded. The other cats crowded in closer. “The First Great Mystery you have to solve is this: What is inside Bertram the Bad’s doghouse?” Polo thought his legs were going to give out from under him. Marco himself went a little pale around the whiskers. “The boys and I,” Texas went on, “have always no- ticed how Bertram barks whenever anyone comes near his yard.
He guards his house night and day, yet none of us has ever seen what it is he protects so fiercely.” “Oh, Texas,” Carlotta said worriedly, fully awake now. “Don’t you think this is a bit dangerous?” “Nonsense. Polo is fast and Marco can read. A cat that can reeeaaad,” and here Texas drew out the word, “must be a very extraordinary cat indeed.
