She felt Richard squeeze her hand and Mary realized it was not the time to impart the intelligence concerning Alice’s father also being Wickham’s father, Alistair Darcy. But why would any nursemaid harm their charge? That’s simply outrageous!” Richard sighed and the occupants turned their attention to him.

Graham agreed and imparted that some of the village had even suspected the child was actually Jane’s, or his. “But surely they all saw Lydia?” Mary asked, and the two residents of Scotland shook their heads. “Very few knew Lydia to be with child, or even that Mrs. Darcy had a sister with her when they arrived.

The Darcys were very circumspect about the situation.” Mary looked confused so Jane explained further. “Remember, another family was to take the child.” Jane gulped, suddenly feeling very guilty that it was she and Elizabeth who decided the child could not be sent away over their remorse of losing Lydia. Mary blinked back tears as she spied lines of worry and pain marring her sister’s features. She had known her family was burdened with new worries and concerns since her father had died over a year ago, but she had remained focused on her needs so that she had forgotten the strain on her sisters.

The matter was dropped as Richard changed the subject to the reconstruction of Blaylock House and Jane talked extensively about her conservatory that was to span the entire southern wall of the old castle. Mary told them stories of her time in London with the Gardiners and a few comical moments from her travels to Newcastle, including the two times she nearly turned around.
