A Pint of Peaches and Poison: A Little Mermaid Retelling - Raven, Anabelle book cover

He was the most fun dance partner I’d had in years. “It seems a fae who can dance underwater can adjust to land pretty fast.” He grinned, with his dimple, and winked. “Must be magic.” * * * Warrick’s storm hit shortly after dark, but it was such a light drizzle that everyone stayed on deck, enjoying the music and food.

I retreated to the starboard railing for a few moments by myself when two servers approached me with drinks and cookies. “Refreshments, Yer Highness?” In the dark, I couldn’t see the speaker’s face, but I knew that voice. And he was no castle server. “Border?” I hissed. “What are you doing here?” “Dromir had an idea.” Another unexpected voice, but one I knew well. “Shiffen.” My heartbeat picked up.

These were two men from Dromir’s rebellion. Two that had been at so many meetings with me that I knew their voices. “How many of you are here?” I scanned the dark ship, wondering how far Warrick was from us. “Jus’ us,” Border whispered back. “Dromir said he wus worried ‘bout you having to spend ‘nother night with that fae. So we’s here to take care of ‘im for you.” My heart started pounding harder.

Yes, I’d tried to kill him, and yes, I’d taken another knife from Dromir. But Warrick had stayed awake all night and not touched me. And then he’d been friendly all day. And so sweet on the boarding plank and ship. Maybe he was still planning something, but I wasn’t sure killing him was the solution anymore. My stomach clenched into a tight knot, and I scratched my thumbnail. The fact was, I’d never killed anyone, and the idea of it now that I’d spent some time with Warrick made me a little bit sick.

“We jus’ need you to pull him away from ev’rybody else. Get him off to the side here, an’ we’ll take care of the res’.” Before I could answer, an ear-splitting crack of thunder rent the air, and a bigger wave than normal shook the boat enough that I almost lost my balance. Lightning tore across the sky, so bright I shut my eyes, and the drizzling rain turned to a driving downpour.

“Below deck!” the captain shouted. “All guests move below deck!”
