A Song In The Storm: Book One Of The Leviathan’s Call – Knight, Riley

Though they shared a name, the southwestern Spire of Yuri Llaqta was so much more than that. Its base expanded for miles, gradually thinning as it rose leagues into the sky. Sprawled at its base were enough tents to compose a city and torches illuminating the night. Shortly after departing the lost encampment, the spire had appeared on the horizon, guiding their steps across the shifting plains.
Shimmying forward, Eckart kept low as he counted the men surrounding the camp’s perimeter—dozens riding on horseback or stationed near entrances. Yet no natural formations added defense to their position—a flat stretch of rock separated Eckart from the spire and little else. Strange. The Qoylla tribe was protecting their camp from intruders but not from an army.
They had no fortifications built, no soldiers stationed near the perimeter. It was as if they did not intend to mount a defense should an invading force arrive. Figuring he’d seen enough, Eckart crawled backward until he was sure he was out of sight before rising and jogging back to the others. Johanna paced before the animals, arms folded tightly. “Well?” She asked. Tefnut trotted forward, pulling against its rope as it sniffed Eckart’s hand curiously. “The perimeter is well guarded—we’d struggle to slip by unseen.”
“Plan B it is, then.” Johanna decided. “Do you remember what I told you, Leofric?” Pressing his fists together, Leo rattled off a few Llaqtan words. “Thank you, hello, and good day.” He’d listened intently to the harsh accent Johanna had said them with and replicated it half-decently. “Good enough,” Johanna said, satisfied. “Try not to speak, if possible.” “You’re certain they won’t see us emerge?” Leo asked nervously. “So long as I can reach the spire.” Johanna turned, holding a hand up to the hillside.
“Stay close; we’ll have to be careful.” Her fingers sparked with black, and an archway appeared against the earth with the sound of shuddering stone. Gesturing for them to follow, Johanna trotted down the ramp into the darkness below. Leading Dilsaeth, Eckart guided the stallion into the strange tunnel. Torches ablaze with fire illuminated the subterranean passage, outlining dark walls set with broad pillars. “What is this?” Leo asked, looking around. “The halls of Valeria,” Johanna answered, glancing back.

The Empire declares them holy sites, forbidding entry. As a result, few know what lies in the woods beyond the dead soil.
Altanbern: A mountainous, frigid region to the south of the Empire. Home to scant peoples in scattered villages, as well as the Gaevral cefran tribe. Cefra: A race of people known for their elemental magic and pupil-less eyes. Nearly all live in isolated tribes outside of Imperial Territory. Catalyst: The means by which cefra utilize their inborn elemental powers.
One cefra might conjure spells through music, while another must be enraged to cast. Each catalyst is unique, ranging from physical items to moods. Clodian Empire: The largest human empire. Consists of four smaller nations: Dragos, Athelstan, Thuatia and the seat of the capital, Sigilus. A theocracy, it is ruled by a holy Emperor. Evoker: Human mages.
The talent is rare, normally inherited by noble families. Wielders can conjure items, events, and senses from their own memories. Beyond magic, evokers possess perfect memories, able to recall the smallest details in perfect clarity.
